Manchester! This is the first little library I’ve made for Manchester, and it might be the furthest one from Exeter I’ve built. I should probably start a map.

It was commissioned for a new-build estate and will soon be on its way by courier. The building part is finished; I’ve moved on to gnawing my nails off until I know it’s arrived safely.

Where are you watching from? I’m going to need more pins for that map.

Punk Against Poverty CIC posted the other day to explain that their pantry has always been based on a really simple principle: take what you need, leave what you can.

We wanted to share a little reminder that the pantry is still outside the Orestone office, open for anyone who needs it.

If you’re able to, you can also help by dropping off non-perishable food items for others to take.

It’s a small idea, but one that can make a real difference in our local community.

Could you build a little library for your community? 📚

This one began as plywood in my workshop and ended up in Fawkham, where we delivered it in person for the parish council. Three shelves, double doors and a featherboard roof — because it has to live outside in the British weather.

How big a little library can you build from one sheet of plywood?

Quite big, apparently. 📚

I set myself the challenge of squeezing the largest library I could from one sheet of ply—and then decided that wasn’t quite complicated enough, so gave it a Flourish and Blotts-inspired makeover too.

There’s an open-book apex, a leaded-style window, a hand-painted sign and even a door handle made from a wand. Because a perfectly ordinary handle clearly wasn’t going to do.

This was made for a community project near Exeter. They covered the materials and I donated my time—which was no hardship, because this was one of those builds I thoroughly enjoyed watching come together.

It even received a ribbon for its opening day, which is considerably more ceremony than most of my woodworking gets.

I’ve built 27+ little libraries now, so follow along if you enjoy transformations, bookish details and ideas that become slightly more elaborate than originally planned.

The last couple of weeks have been very full.

My daughter has started school, my full-time job has carried on doing its thing, and Little Library Builder has been busy too—with new enquiries and meetings about some lovely potential commissions.

We’ve also been clearing out the garage to make more room for library building, which feels like a promising sign of things to come.

Meanwhile, work on the Manchester library has been moving along steadily. It now has at least two coats of paint, the shelves are installed and the front panel is securely in place.

It’s reached my favourite stage: the point where it finally starts looking like a library rather than a collection of painted plywood occupying most of the garage.

Next up are the plexiglass, doors and roof—but it’s getting there 📚🔨

I paid £25 for this little oak cabinet—and it came with considerably more backstory than the average Facebook Marketplace find.

I spotted it looking tiny, dusty and neglected and immediately thought, “That’s really cute. I bet I could turn it into a library.”

My planning process was essentially that, followed by sending Jamie off to collect it. 😂

The seller explained that his stepfather, who had been a carpenter or joiner, had made it. And honestly, it showed. It was solid oak, beautifully constructed and full of carefully made details.

Then the story took a turn I was absolutely not expecting.

The seller told Jamie that his stepfather had later tried to set fire to the family home while the seller’s mother was still inside. Thankfully, he didn’t succeed—but afterwards, the family understandably wanted to remove everything he had made or left behind.

That was how this beautiful cabinet ended up sitting unwanted in an outbuilding before appearing on Marketplace for £25.

I restored the oak, kept as many original details as I could and turned it into the tiniest little library.

A lady bought it to keep some books that were particularly special to her—which feels like a much happier ending for it.

I do still wish I’d kept this one, though. Not an especially helpful attitude when the general idea is to sell the things I make.
