The first thing I check every single morning… the weather. 😂

Not because I’m planning a nice day out.

Running a waste yard means the weather can completely change how the day goes.

☀️ Too dry = dust absolutely everywhere.
🌧️ Too wet = the yard turns into brown soup.

So before bookings, emails or anything else, I check what we’re dealing with for the day.

Sounds like a tiny thing, but when you’re running a business, it’s often the little habits that save you the biggest headaches.

This is why “clean hardcore” needs to actually be clean. 👇

This skip was booked as clean hardcore, which means it should only contain things like bricks, concrete, rubble and similar inert material.

But once general rubbish gets mixed in, it changes the whole load.

At that point we either have to charge for the contamination or return the unwanted waste to the customer.

It’s not us being difficult, mixed waste costs more to process and can’t go through the same recycling route as clean hardcore.

If you’re ever unsure what can go in, just ask before filling the skip. It can save everyone a headache later. 👍

One of the first things people want to do when they buy a business is change the name…

New logo. New branding. Make it theirs.

But sometimes that’s the exact opposite of what you should do.

When you buy an established business, you’re not just buying the vans, equipment or customer list — you’re buying the name people already know and trust.

We’ve bought businesses where keeping that name has been a massive part of the value.

Doesn’t mean you can never rebrand. Just don’t throw away years of goodwill because you fancy a new logo on day one. 😂

Looking for our next digger… 👀

We’re down at Global Machinery having a look at the SANY diggers.

We’re after something around 5–6 tonne to replace our current 8 tonne CASE. It’ll mainly be working in the waste game, so it needs to be tough, reliable and happy getting abused all day 😂

Running a business is basically just solving problems all day. 😂

And today has been the most Monday of Mondays.

Short staffed, holiday, sickness and trying to get skips delivered and collected, while also attempting to do the other 400 things that apparently needed doing today.

Every time you solve one problem, another one seems to appear.

But that’s business.

They say you can judge a man by the size of the problems he has to solve…

Running a business will certainly make sure you never run out of them. 😂

Before I got into skip hire, I genuinely thought the business model was simple…

Customer pays you for the skip.
You collect it.
Then you sell everything inside it.

Money twice. Easy. 😂

Turns out I was very wrong.

The reality is you’re paying to sort, process, recycle and dispose of thousands of tonnes of waste and some of it costs an absolute fortune to send for recycling.

Amazing how different a business looks from the outside compared to when you’re actually running it.
