Beginning Of Life
19 October 2026

For my painting, ‘Diamond Sutra’ I cycled 800 miles to Scotland on my old bike to celebrate being 60! My plan was to collect sixty objects on the journey to represent significant moments in my life which also involved my family. Each object had to fit into a small Waitrose bag. The Christmas before I set off, a miniature Snakes and Ladder set fell out of my cracker.

I decided that this object would be a fitting symbol for my birth, as life, like the game, could go any way. So I increased the objects to sixty one.

You can see the game and the first section of the painting on my latest Facebook, Bluesky and Instagram posts.

A miniature snakes and ladders set from a Christmas cracker was the first of 61 objects to appear in my painting DIAMOND SUTRA (2006) made after my 800 mile bicycle ride to Scotland to celebrate being sixty (see detail of painting). The other objects were collected along the way.

Looking Back – And Looking Forwards

I’ve just made a couple of posts on Instagram and Facebook about how I’ve used objects to make paintings about my family .

In ‘The Rashamon Effect’ [2014) I used my grandmother’s quizzer as part of a story about lost love.

On display in’ Museum Piece’ (1984) are two toy soldiers which I bought for our daughter when she was born but my wife wouldn’t allow her to touch because they were made of lead!

I am thinking of using them again to represent two of my three grandchildren in my next painting ‘Twas The Night Before’. I need to find a third model to complete the set.

MUSEUM PIECE (1984) was the only family painting I ever did on glass. Among the objects I used were two lead toy soldiers I bought for Yve when she was born. I am thinking of using them again for my next project TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE, only I need a third figure to represent my three grandchildren.

Cromwell House have set out a rather nice display of prints and postcards of my painting ‘ Another Year’ in their tourist shop. You can see it on my latest Instagram, Facebook and Bluesky posts. I believe I’ve sold two prints already!

Although the picture shows views of Ely Cathedral at dusk and dawn, it’s recording the deaths of my mother and sister-in-law and the births of two new female Coneys, a year later.

This is the real family portraits- a little film made by my nephew of our annual holiday in Sheringham with 30 members of the Coney family. We’ve been going to the same little cottage for the last forty years.

Fabric Painting
23 September 2026
A while ago I visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and was inspired by the still life artist, Jan De Heem and his wonderful paintings, especially of fabric.

A major challenge in my latest painting ‘Forged In Life’ is the rendering of copes, so I am keeping images of his work close so I can use them as reference.

You can see an image of De Heem’s work (and my humble beginnings) on my latest Instagram , Bluesky and Facebook posts.
