From Failed Felt to Traditional Lead 🔨

We were recently appointed to renovate this bay window roof after the existing felt roofing system had failed.

Years of ponding water, caused by an insufficient fall, had allowed the felt to crack and deteriorate. As a result, water was able to pe*****te the roof, causing extensive rot to both the timber deck and supporting joists below.

The only proper solution was to strip everything back and rebuild the roof from the structure upwards.

Our works included:

✅ Stripping the existing roof covering and removing all rotten timbers
✅ Renewing the damaged timber joists
✅ Installing a new 18mm timber deck
✅ Forming a new fall of approximately 5–6° to ensure efficient water run-off and eliminate future ponding
✅ Installing a brand new traditional lead roof, secured using welted clips and copper fixings where required
✅ Installing a separate 150mm lead cover flashing to the rear wall, creating a durable and completely watertight finish

Another bay window roof transformed using traditional methods and quality materials, providing the customer with a long-lasting roofing solution that will perform for decades to come.

One Job “Lead” To Another…..
Can’t resist a good pun! 😂🔨

We were back this week for a returning customer after recently carrying out lead repairs to a leaking section of copes and wallhead.

After other solutions suggested simply applying more cement, we recommended a proper long-term solution: a fully encapsulated Code 5 lead detail to create a truly watertight, maintenance-free finish.

Having completed the first section and discussed our findings with the customer, they asked us to return and complete the remaining area.

The existing detail was stripped back, including the old watergate, which turned out to be a hybrid of lead and flashband. We formed a new timber base using tile battens before installing a new lead watergate, ready for the copes and wallhead to be fully encapsulated in Code 5 lead.

The difference speaks for itself. Gone is the old mineral felt covering the copes, replaced with a traditional lead detail built to protect the property for decades to come while looking the part too.

🔨 When Cement Fails, Lead Prevails. Edinburgh Tenement Repair 🔨

We were delighted to be appointed by a returning customer to carry out specialist roofing works on this traditional Edinburgh tenement near The Meadows.

The existing cement skews had been patched and repaired numerous times over the years, but they had reached the end of their life. Cracks had developed throughout the cement, allowing water to pe*****te the roof and cause damage internally.

Following our inspection, we recommended replacing the failed cement detail with a traditional lead watergate system and separate lead cover flashings. Unlike cement, this detail allows each component to perform as intended, creating a durable, low-maintenance solution that eliminates the need for continual cement repairs.

To complete the works, we stripped the existing detail back to the timber deck before installing new lead watergates with a 150mm base over new timber tilting fillets. The existing Scotch slates were then carefully reinstated with the correct overlap onto the new lead to ensure a fully weatherproof finish. While on site, we also carried out additional repairs across the roof where required, ensuring this traditional Scotch slate roof is now performing as it should.

🔨 Built to Last – Not Just Patched Up.

Our customer had ongoing water ingress through the coping stones and weathered harling. While previous roofers had only suggested repointing and applying more cement, we proposed a permanent solution rather than another temporary repair.

The entire area has now been fully protected with Code 5 milled lead, creating a durable, maintenance-free finish designed to perform for decades.

The works included:
✔️ Full Code 5 lead covering to the affected area.
✔️ Coping stones fully capped in lead, with new lead cladding where required.
✔️ Lead neatly raggled into the existing render with a traditional lead flashing detail.
✔️ Fixed and secured throughout using copper fixings and copper ties where required.

The finished result is a durable, weatherproof system designed to withstand the Scottish climate and provide a long-term, maintenance-free solution against future water ingress—giving the customer complete peace of mind.

A Little Update From Spence Roofing 👶💚

Firstly, we’d like to apologise for any delays in getting back to anyone looking for quotes, enquiries, or messages recently.

As many of you may know, we have just welcomed the arrival of our beautiful baby girl, Mila Jessie Spence, born on the 14th May 2026. 🩷

We’re currently trying to get to grips with parenthood while enjoying our little bubble of happiness and joy at the minute, so things may be moving a little slower than normal over the next couple of weeks.

Mum and baby are both doing great — dad is just extremely sleep deprived at the minute trying to figure out this whole new routine! 😂💤

🎉 One Year of Spence Roofing 🎉

Today marks exactly one year since I took the leap and started Spence Roofing Lead Work Specialists full-time.

Leaving the security of a long-term job to go out on my own was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken. The uncertainty of self-employment can be stressful at times, but one year later, I can honestly say it’s been the best decision I’ve made (so far I keep saying, As things can always change).

When I first set out, I deliberately gave myself zero expectations and zero major goals for my first year. The only real plan was to work hard, be honest, and do good work. Looking back now, the level I feel we’ve reached within the first year has honestly been incredible personally.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve worked on everything from small repairs to full re-roofs, specialist lead work, heritage details, and single-ply systems across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We’ve met some brilliant customers, worked alongside great people in the trade, and slowly building a business brick by brick completely through hard work, consistency, word of mouth, and trust.🔨

I’m genuinely grateful to every single customer who has supported us, recommended us, or trusted us with their home or property. A massive thank you as well to my friends and family for constantly backing me, liking and sharing my posts no matter what they are, and supporting the business from day one!

It genuinely means more than you probably realise to me. 💚

Running a business isn’t easy. Long days, late nights, stress, quotes, paperwork, weather problems, and pressure constantly — juggling all of this while still trying to be a good partner, a good friend, a good person, and hopefully to be a good dad.

But I’m proud of what we’ve built in just one year, and this is only the beginning!

🏠 Busy Behind The Scenes at Spence Roofing 👶

We haven’t posted in a few weeks as things have been extremely busy behind the scenes here at Spence Roofing.

Between a heavy workload 🔨, house renovations , and preparing to welcome our baby girl due this week 👶💕, life has definitely been non-stop lately.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be slowing things down slightly to spend some important time together as a family 🩷 and enjoy those first moments with our new arrival. That said, we’ll still be on hand to deal with any enquiries, questions, quotes, or urgent roofing issues where possible.

THIS IS A PROPER RENOVATION.

A full transformation on this one — both dormers stripped right back to the bones and rebuilt the right way.

We uncovered 3 layers of old mineral felt and insulation on the roofs, all removed along with the existing coverings.

All old rosemary tiles to the faces and sides were stripped out, taking everything back to structure so we could start fresh.

The build-up was then completed with:
• New premium breathable membrane throughout
• High quality composite cladding system in anthracite with aluminium trims — no bending or warping over time
• 2 new Alwitra VSK single ply roofs installed with fresh insulation
• Code 5 lead where required
• Stainless steel fixings used throughout

We only use materials we trust — products that last and perform properly. No cheap alternatives.

A slightly different post from us this week 👷‍♂️⚠️

We don’t have a project update to share yet as we’re currently hard at work jumping between several ongoing jobs across Edinburgh.

So instead, we thought it would be a good moment to bring awareness to something that affects many people in our industry.

Men’s mental health in construction.

Construction is one of the toughest industries out there — not just physically, but mentally as well.

Sadly the statistics around this are pretty shocking.
In the UK, construction workers are around three times more likely to die by su***de than the national average, with thousands more silently dealing with stress, anxiety and depression.

Sometimes the conversation looks a bit like this:

“Did you have a good day at work?”

You pause for a second.
Because your head’s been chaos all day.

Deadlines.
Money.
Work to finish.
People depending on you.
Problems to solve.
Long days.
Constant pressure.

But you just say…

“Yeah, it was alright.”

And carry it all again tomorrow.
