Our proposals for alterations to this early-19th century dwelling in the Portobello Conservation Area have recently been granted planning permission.

The works will feature the insertion of a new staircase between the first floor property and its attic, creating valuable additional space for our clients and their young family. A pair of dormer windows are proposed to the rear elevation, clad in a warm-toned metal to tie in with the pantile roof, and angled for enhanced privacy and a glimpse of the sea.

We are excited to see this project develop in the coming months.

We are delighted to share that the North Sutherland Health and Social Care Hub has been shortlisted in the Future Building or Project category at the 2026 Scottish Design Awards.

Congratulations to our client Wildland Ltd for NHS Highland
and the wider consultant team whose collaboration, expertise, and commitment have helped shape the project. The proposal brings together healthcare, social care and community facilities within an integrated and forward-looking civic building for North Sutherland.

We are delighted to be continuing our work with local community organisation St Monans Auld Kirk Enterprise on the conservation and re-use of the Category A-listed building as a multi-purpose community venue. The project is supported by and , and will see the implementation of building fabric repairs and sustainable upgrades to reduce energy consumption and open the building to a range of activities.

Our project in Brechin takes its cue from the pitched roof forms of the existing buildings, which enclose the new gabled volume of the courtyard extension. The new intervention will act as a lightweight counterpart to the enclosing solid masonry buildings, with an economical timber structure exposed internally and generous glazing to its gable end allowing enhanced connection to the rear garden.

OCA Studio recently held a public consultation for the restoration of Coulter Public Library, a Category B-listed rural library and former caretaker’s cottage. We’re exploring how the building’s role as a library can be enhanced and diversified, with sensitive restoration and adaptation to create an accessible community resource and affordable housing. It was fantastic to meet residents and hear their feedback, which will help shape the next stage of the project.

Last night, Martin took part in 'Lineage' at the Royal Scottish Academy - a great opportunity to reflect on shared influences and reconnect with talented former colleagues.

Alongside the RSA’s Generation exhibition, the discussion gathered architects who began their careers at Richard Murphy Architects and now lead their own practices. The conversation was led by Richard Murphy RSA and Robin Webster PPRIAS.

Generation is open for one more weekend, closing on 8th March. We are proud to be showing models, drawings and photos of our projects, looking forward to what’s next while honouring the legacy of our founder, Oliver Chapman (1969–2024) who also began his career at Richard Murphy Architects.

At OCA Studio we have several exciting projects on the cards for 2026, including this new extension to a semi-detached Victorian property in Edinburgh. Our design replaces the existing dilapidated conservatory with a sunken garden room, complete with green roof and an internal bench seat at garden level. The new volume is constructed in locally-produced waste-based brick in a warm variety of tones which echo the rubble sandstone of the existing building.

Our Todlaw Supported Housing looking sharp when we revisited earlier this year. Together with a central services facility, these 14 fully-accessible dwellings were the first care home in Scotland to be based on a housing model rather than traditional institutional care provision, and offer a greater degree of independence and autonomy for their occupants. We love to see how our buildings stand the test of time - here the larch cladding has weathered beautifully, while the pitched roofs have provided the perfect location for some new solar panels.
