A happy return to one of our recent projects in Edinburgh. After quite a bit of clearance, including couch grass and snowberry removal we considerably improved the levels, soil and drainage before any work began. Because of this the garden has transformed from what at one point was a muddy, waterlogged mud-pit to a flourishing rustic cottage garden.

The space uses reclaimed bricks, and also stone already on site. These are used to encourage movement towards the bbq space, kitchen garden and seating areas, from which the dense rich planting and surrounding views can be fully enjoyed. In time the various climbers, wisteria and clematis will further soften the pergola and fence areas, but sooner than that the various roses will emerge to lift the garden even more with their diverse colors and scent.

Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae bringing vibrant lime green structure to the spring garden today. Better known for its use in woodland settings it is used to good effect here, although does need to be kept to its clumps as it does like a wander!

Its been creeping up, but spring is officially here; creamy white Narcissus 'Tresamble' with its hint of yellow linking up with the more traditional daffodils. Cherry blossom on show and early flowering Clematis alpina about to have it's bell shaped blue flowers break open. Much more to come!

Popped in to do a few bits on an entrance planting scheme we set up a couple of summers ago; mainly incorporating ericaceous compost around the roots of the acid loving Rhododendrons and Daphnes. We also cut back the wood aster which had given winter structure and divided and spread out clumps of foxglove, now going into their 2nd year, ready to flower.

Very happy with the development. Clearly a lot more light getting through after all our thinning out. Winter interest still on display; the seed heads of the newly planted Hydrangea paniculata on show, not quite ready to be cut back, with the threat of frost still looming.

Plenty of fresh green herbaceous growth emerging. The Liriope has now finished flowering leaving its vibrant green spikes, with Hellebores, daphne and snowdrops providing the current flowering interest, soon to be followed by the white daffodil ‘Narcissus tresamble’.

Now this scheme has shown successful establishment, am very excited to see what the spring and summer will bring!

*Have included a few before picks to show how things have progressed.

Update on an ornamental vegetable garden we have been working on in East Lothian. Tulips have brought the garden to life in the early season with Cosmos and Zinnia sown in-between rows for late season colour.

Plenty of organic matter has been incorporated and seeds directly sown; some beds left undug and some dug into the existing soil. The no dig beds leave soil organisms undisturbed and suppress existing w**d seeds and so could prove more productive whilst being far lower maintenance than the beds that have been dug. Will be interesting to compare the performance and practicality of both options as the season progresses!
