Mutual is an artist-run studio co-operative based in Edinburgh. Free dedicated parking is available directly in front of the main entrance.

At the heart of the project lay the co-operative values of mutual aid, self-organization and solidarity. Our efforts are currently invested in the provision of affordable studio spaces for early career artists. In the near future, we hope to expand our remit to include regular events, sustainable fabrication facilities and community outreach initiatives. Founding artists and studio holders:

Accessibility:
Mutual is fully accessible to visitors with impaired mobility. There is ramped wheelchair access throughout the building and multiple elevators serving all floors. All toilets are also wheelchair accessible. Please contact us if you have any requests when planning a visit and we’ll be more than happy to arrange for dedicated support. FRIEND REQUEST: FROM MATTHEW WILSON

Matt Wilson

Working across printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media, Edinburgh-based artist and educator Matthew Wilson’s practice examines the replication and overworking of preexisting materials. His work delves into how the meaning of imagery and objects shift when they are deconstructed, repurposed, sampled, or overprocessed, despite core elements of their original form persisting. The work in this exhibition was created in the aftermath of a residency at Dundee Contemporary Arts and the RSA Collections Department.

Wilson graduated from the Royal College of Art (2018), and previously studied Fine Art at the University of Dundee (2013). He recently received the Scottish Artists' Benevolent Association Award (2025), the RSA Benno Schotz Prize (2024), and was a selected artist for the RSA Residencies for Scotland Programme (2022/23).

FRIEND REQUEST: FROM KIM DAWOON

kim dawoon

Kim Dawoon (b. Seoul, Korea) is a multidisciplinary artist, working across photography, moving image, and audio-visual installation. Her practice frequently features bodies and movement, with the interplay between connection and disconnection as a recurring theme. Her work interrogates and reimagines culturally dominant frameworks.

Kim graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2019. Her work has been exhibited at the ICAO Museum, Montreal; Lake, Enclave, London; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Lewisham Arthouse, London; Valletta Contemporary, Malta; and Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen. Kim received the Arts Council England DYCP grant in 2022 and was selected for The London Open 2022 at Whitechapel Gallery.

Bloom (2026) is a new photographic installation that uses a colour-processed photograph of fungi, applied to an everyday object. Serving as a liminal vessel, it bridges states and challenges our perception.

Neil is an analogue collage artist.

This series of 100 small collages was created over a period of 100 days. Each collage contains at least one element taken from the book ‘Edinburgh since 1900. Ninety years of photographs’.

FRIEND REQUEST: FROM ALICE CARR

Alice Carr is a British-Australian painter and printmaker based in Edinburgh. The work she produces is rooted in the lines between field and city, human and animal. Using thick layers, expressive mark making and various mediums she allows stories to emerge from within images, sometimes unsettling, sometimes humorous.

Alice received her BA in medieval languages from the University of Cambridge in 2012. She attended the Royal Drawing School’s Online Drawing Development Year in 2022, and Turps Correspondence Course in 2023. Her paintings have been shown in galleries, art fairs, and held in collections in Europe, Australia and North America.

FRIEND REQUEST: FROM AMY HARDING

Amy Harding

My work sits somewhere in the world of realistic representation, while inviting an energy in mark making. Through painting, I aim to capture a certain moment that I feel cannot be expressed in another way - whether this is the quiet feeling of connection within a group setting, or an everyday object that would normally be overlooked. I take inspiration from my own experience of my surroundings, and I am especially drawn to the human figure and domestic environments. My primary medium is oil paint.

These two paintings (Painting from Greece 1, Painting from Greece 2) represent a shift that I have taken recently in my practice - the attempt to capture the essence of a memory in mark making, with particular focus on the fall of light. Both of these studies were created in just one or two sittings. I wanted to preserve the freshness that is present at the beginning of a painting, but that can become lost as the process goes on. My hope is that this brings across the fleeting and nostalgic feeling of a summer holiday memory, with that particular quality of mood and light that can’t be captured again.
