Introducing The Piggery — a new build home near Edinburgh.

Nestled within the grounds of a listed building on the site of a former piggery, this home takes inspiration from the agricultural buildings and landscape that surround it.

The house follows a simple, linear form that echoes the vernacular of the adjacent stable buildings. Its restrained material palette of natural sandstone and standing seam zinc is a direct nod to the site's farmyard heritage.

The accommodation is arranged over two thoughtfully designed levels:

Upper floor — main bedrooms and open-plan living, kitchen and dining, positioned to capture the spectacular rolling countryside views

Lower floor — covered parking, main entrance, home office, boot and plant rooms

Tying it all together is a beautiful curved staircase, forming a real architectural centrepiece.

Excited to share one of our current projects in Perthshire.

This traditional stone cottage sits within the Grandtully & Strathtay Conservation Area, and our brief was to remove a series of poor-quality, thermally inefficient extensions added over the years and replace them with a single, well-considered contemporary extension.

Our clients were clear that they wanted a bright, contemporary living space that still felt rooted in the cottage's character, and this shaped much of our material thinking: natural stone roots the new work firmly within the language of the original building, complemented with timber cladding and zinc.

The garden is a particular highlight of the site — a series of terraced levels retained with drystane walls, which the design has been carefully considered around and preserves.

Sustainability was central to the brief too, with the whole house upgraded thermally and new solar PV panels and an air source heat pump installed to create a genuinely energy-efficient home for our clients to retire into.

The design incorporates a Kitchen Garden for growing culinary ingredients.

Some buildings just ask to be looked at differently.

This section of listed stone steading near Biggar has spent years as a garage and general dumping ground for bikes, ladders and garden tools — but underneath the clutter is a beautiful, honest structure with traditional thick stone walls and a steep pitched slate roof.

Our design keeps all of that character intact and builds a new life around it.

A new entrance hall is formed, with birch ply lined walls and a natural limestone floor— providing a visually warm and welcoming space.

At the heart of the space is a sculptural steel spiral stair in soft sage green which rises up to a mezzanine playroom and den, lit by bespoke conservation rooflights above.

We love projects like this. Working with what's already there, and giving it room to be something new, through thoughtful design, detailing and carefully selected materials.

New Build Home | Colinton, Edinburgh

Recently completed new build home in Colinton, delivered with a clear architectural idea, carefully crafted detailing, and a high standard of workmanship. A great job by IDH Individually Designed Homes Ltd , whose care on site helped realise the design so well.

This is our third new build house commission on the same street, reflecting a strong understanding of the local context and the trust built with clients over time.

The house is centred around an open-plan kitchen / dining / family space with a strong relationship between inside and out, creating a seamless connection to the garden. Comfort and efficiency were key priorities, with low energy heating via an air source heat pump and underfloor heating throughout.

We provided a full architectural service — from design through to planning and building warrant consents, on-site technical support and certification — working closely with the client and contractor to deliver the finished home.
