“My tree has mushrooms growing around the base. Does that mean it's dying?”

Not necessarily.

Fungi are a completely natural part of gardens and woodlands.
Some live on dead organic material in the soil.
Others have relationships with living trees.
And some can be associated with decay.

So the important thing isn't simply “there are mushrooms.”
It's what species they are, where they're growing and what else is happening with the tree.

If fungi appear around a tree, particularly if they're growing directly from the trunk or roots, they're worth noticing.

And rather than immediately removing them, a photograph can actually be useful for identification.

You don't need to know anything about trees to take a useful look around your garden.

This weekend, spend five minutes outside.
Look up.
Look down.
And look around.

Has anything changed?
Are branches getting closer to the house?
Is the hedge taking over more of the path?
Are there broken branches?
Are leaves blocking a drain?
Is something growing differently from the rest?

You don't need to diagnose it.
You don't need to find a job that needs doing.

Just get to know what's there.

The people most likely to notice when something changes are the people who see the garden every day.

Sometimes it's not the biggest tree that causes the biggest problem.

A relatively small tree planted in the wrong position can eventually:
🏡 Grow too close to a building
☀️ Block light from a window
🌿 Compete with other planting
🚶 Encroach onto a path
🌳 Outgrow a small garden

That's why thinking about where a tree will be in 10, 20 or even 30 years matters when choosing what and where to plant.

A little tree doesn't stay little forever.

And getting the planting right at the beginning can save a lot of difficult decisions later.

The garden is beginning to change properly now.
Some trees are starting to turn.
Leaves are appearing on lawns.
Growth is slowing.
The evenings are noticeably shorter.
And things that blended into the garden during summer can suddenly become much more obvious.

That branch that's getting close to the house.
The hedge that's wider than you remember.
The tree that's lost leaves differently from everything around it.

October doesn't mean everything needs pruning or tidying.
But it is a lovely month to notice your garden changing.

Sometimes autumn shows you things summer was hiding.

“What does this space actually need?”

1. Trees 🌳
Look for damaged, dead or concerning branches.
2. Hedges 🌿
Check whether growth is affecting paths, access or boundaries.
3. Drainage & access 🏡
Keep paths, driveways and drainage areas clear of vegetation and fallen material.

None of these automatically means work is required.
They're simply good things to keep an eye on.

A little awareness now can make managing your property easier throughout the autumn and winter months.

Trees don't need pruning simply because autumn has arrived.

The right timing depends on the species, the reason for pruning, the tree's condition and the type of work being considered.

Sometimes pruning is appropriate.
Sometimes another time of year is better.
And sometimes the best thing for the tree is to leave it alone.

Good tree care isn't about following a calendar.

It's about understanding the individual tree.

Not literally, of course.

But after years of growth, trees, hedges and shrubs can gradually take up more space than they once did.

A path becomes narrower.
A window gets darker.
The lawn feels smaller.
A boundary starts creeping inwards.

It can happen so gradually that you barely notice.

Until one day you look around and think:
“When did everything get so big?”

The growing season has given you plenty of opportunity to notice changes.

Look at the overall shape.
Check for damaged branches.
Notice changes in the canopy.
Look at the relationship between the tree and everything around it.

And if something doesn't look right, get it assessed.

The aim isn't to find reasons to carry out work.

It's to understand what you have and whether it needs managing.
