We have vehicles coming from edinburgh but this really suits locals to Pollok as the new bicycle network has just been opened. 🤓

Stonemason/lime worker needed for IMMEDIATE start here at Po***ck stables. Good rates paid.

MUST have CSCS card - non negotiable.

Lots of rubble indenting using reclaimed stone onsite, lots of chimneys to be rebuilt in new and old stone and lots and lots of packing and pinning/stabilising masonry in hot limes prior to pointing required.

Last week we (Rosie and I) undertook a building fabric inspection at Law’s Close, a 16th-century merchant’s house at the east end of Kirkcaldy High Street in Fife. Despite the building’s long history, its core structure and garden remain largely intact and inside there a number of rare surviving examples of 16th and 17th century interior decoration. The building was acquired by SHBT in 1986 and painstakingly restored over a 20-year period using natural lime-rich non hydraulic natural materials and traditional techniques.

Today, Law’s Close operates as a commercial business and retail hub and is home to a variety of small businesses. The ground floor retail units are occupied by two independent, family-run shops, Home of Hopecroft and Merchant’s House Café. The garden is available to hire as an outdoor event venue and the upper floors offer flexible office accommodation to let for those looking for a characterful and unique workplace.

The condition of this expertly conserved building today is testament to the architects who had the late great Rory Young lead the repairs over 30 years ago now and as you can see are fairing very well, especially so if you consider these were all putty lime mixes. Kudos to the wonderful for being the most considerate custodians of these precious buildings standing strong and healthy like time capsules into our rich heritage past.

This week we hosted Olive Fraser for a week of work experience, official permission from school now she’s of school leaver age, this is the second time we have hosted her, the last time she was on the tools plastering and dressing stone at Saddell castle where her work was indented into the building and will be there for the rest of time. This year she was my shadow undertaking project management, quantity surveying, defect pathology and building surveying works so she gets a feeling for all parts of our business. She attended management meetings and staff organisation and was attentive and engaged throughout, so much so she learned how valuable a Power Nap on the way home in the van is. She did so well I treated her to a surf session at lost shore next to our workshops. We hope Olive gets more opportunities to explore her interest in heritage crafts or business management and believe that she has the right attitude to go far in life whatever path she chooses. Well done Olive. PS, olives my daughter, to say I’m proud is an understatement, she is AWESOME!

Here’s our directly employed plastering team fully trained in health and safety, ipaf operators using our own render pump to apply 600m2 in just a few weeks of operations. We don’t take risks lightly or without consideration. This project has been very rewarding and posed a significant saving in both cost and duration thanks to the solutions we provided thanks to our research and development on modern industrious equipment.

It’s all going on here at Pollok stables working with Morrisons construction, the chimneys are being reconstructed with careful conservative considerations to rough up the masonry beds as well as replacing the surface finish faces to mm perfect imitation and just look at all these beautiful pinners being strategically placed in our custom blend of hot lime gauged nhl mortars prior to the pointing surface finishing by means flushing out and scrape finish all working green on green, piggy backing the moisture of the ore dampened masonry, notice the use of timber blocks to ensure flat full scrape achieved and oh there’s more, so much more, with the reconstruction of the interior gables using natural clay class b eng bricks and a solid core, yes, I’m not stopping for breath here and using all the commas coz it’s so exciting to work collaboratively using our combined knowledge and experience of traditional construction and craft with page and park architects along with Narro engineers here. This is the project dreams are made of, we are still buzzing from restoring Saddell castle and we land this one, we are blessed indeed. Aaaaand breathe…..
