Last Friday we had a chance to visit a Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Rot exhibition at the Vorarlberger Architektur Institut in Austria (https://v-a-i.at/ausstellungen/re-use).

By refusing unnecessary materials, reducing waste, re-using and recycling resources, and facilitating the rot (biodegradation) of natural materials, the 5R strategy directly confronts the significant carbon footprint associated with building materials' manufacturing, transportation, and disposal. Nearly 40% of global GHG emissions are attributed to the building sector, with a substantial portion occurring before occupancy due to material production and transportation. Adopting the 5R principles can significantly mitigate these "grey emissions," making it a crucial aspect of sustainable architectural practices.

At CROPKA Architects, we are inspired to integrate these insights into our work, reinforcing our commitment to environmentally responsible and sustainable architectural solutions. The 5R strategy not only aligns with our research at University Liechtenstein into the reuse of building materials but also opens new avenues for innovation in our design processes.

We are excited to see the first samples of Shou-Sugi-Ban charred timber arrive! This traditional Japanese method of wood preservation, in use since the XVII century is highly sustainable, protecting timber cladding in a natural way without chemicals, paints and other surface treatments.
