A stunning exterior means very little if the bones beneath it are compromised, and knowing what to look for before committing to re-upholstery can save you both time and money.

Start by checking the joints. Sit in the chair or press firmly on the frame at multiple points. Any wobble, creaking, or flex in the corners signals that the joints have weakened and will need repair before new fabric goes on. Next, inspect the legs for cracks running along the grain of the wood, particularly around the areas where they meet the seat rail. These are common stress fractures on older pieces and, if left untreated, can cause the frame to fail entirely after re-upholstery. Also examine the seat rail itself (the horizontal timber that supports the springs or webbing), as splits or soft spots here indicate the frame may struggle to hold tension once new upholstery is applied.
