Trying to tackle flooring, curtains, blinds and furniture all at once usually ends in overwhelm, and a half-finished house.

A better approach is floor to ceiling, one room at a time. Start with the carpet or flooring, since that sets the tone and colour palette for everything else in the space.

Then build up: curtains and blinds next, then upholstery or wallcoverings to tie it together. Wallcoverings especially are worth a second look if your walls have felt flat for years. They add texture and pattern that paint alone just can't.

Keeping your period drawing room's character alive

Got a Victorian or Edwardian drawing room with cornicing, a good fireplace, and furniture that's seen a few generations? You don't need to strip that character out to make the room feel fresh again.

Start with the pieces worth keeping. A tired armchair or chaise with good bones often just needs re-upholstering rather than replacing, and our workshop handles that in-house, matching fabric to the period rather than fighting it.

Flooring matters too. Engineered wood or a quality wool carpet can sit comfortably under original skirting and plasterwork without looking out of place, unlike some modern alternatives.

Wallcoverings are worth a second look as well. The right pattern adds depth to a high-ceilinged room without overwhelming it.

Choosing fabric that'll survive the family sofa

Ever wonder why some sofa fabrics look tired after two years while others go strong for a decade? It comes down to something called the Martindale rub test, and it's worth knowing before you pick your next upholstery.

The test works by rubbing a fabric sample against a standard wool cloth, counting how many rubs it takes before the threads start to wear. That number is the Martindale rating.

Light domestic use (think a spare room chair) only needs around 10,000 rubs. A family sofa that sees daily use, kids, dogs, the lot, really wants 25,000 or higher.

Anything rated 30,000+ is generally considered heavy-duty, the kind of thing we'd recommend for a busy living room or a commercial setting.

When customers bring furniture in for re-upholstery, we always talk through these numbers with them first. It saves heartache (and money) further down the line.

Reupholstery that can take a Saturday night rush

Curtain heading styles: which one suits your room?

Choosing a curtain heading changes the whole feel of a window, not just the fabric on it.

Pinch pleat is the classic choice: tailored triple folds stitched at the top, giving structured, elegant drape. It suits period Edinburgh homes with taller windows and formal rooms.

Eyelet headings hang from metal rings threaded straight onto the pole, creating soft, even folds. They're simpler, more contemporary, and easier to draw.

Goblet pleats are the most decorative of the three, rounded at the top and padded to hold their shape, best suited to statement rooms where the curtains are meant to be noticed.

Fabric weight matters too. A heavy interlined curtain holds a goblet pleat beautifully, but the same style in a light fabric will collapse and lose its shape.
