Ground Screws Scotland Installation of ground screws as a sustainable alternative to concrete foundations or base supports

REMOVABLE FOUNDATIONS

A garden room designed to move with you.

Building → crane → transport → insert ground screws → reinstall.

Why leave a major investment behind?

The reversible nature of the foundation can also be particularly relevant when designing structures where mobility and the Caravan Acts may form part of the planning assessment. Each project must be assessed individually.

A question we are regularly asked about is Permitted Development rights - Here is our quick guide leaflet .......This helps in the planning of your ground screw and base finished height to allow the correct roof height of your final build.

We were requested to install this 8.2m x 5.1m golf simulator base for an Edinburgh client but after a conversation about permissable development height restrictions it was agreed the best thing to do would be to dig down to accommodate the 150mm height of screws to allow airflow and the height of our sub base timber to allow max height of the building itself.
A tight squeeze for our excavator and some nice re grading and blending work of spoil from the excavation.

Some jobs start with a clear plot and straightforward access. This one started on an undeveloped hillside, with a geodesic dome positioned on a remote sloping section of the site.

Before the dome could go up, the ground had to be made ready. We created the car parking and access area, then stripped and regraded the dome location to work with the natural contours of the hillside, alongside trenching, underground services, and drainage work. Ground conditions proved particularly challenging - a significant bedrock made conventional ground-screw installation difficult, so the method was adapted, using a heavy-duty steel rock spike and 400 kg piling hammer to form pilot holes through the difficult strata.

From there, the bespoke circular timber sub-base was constructed entirely on site, its complex geometry calling for careful setting to create a strong, accurately formed platform. A large Scottish larch viewing deck was added alongside, profiled into the natural fall of the hillside for an infinity-style deck that keeps the panoramic countryside views open.

What makes this one particularly interesting is everything happening underneath and around the finished dome. From groundworks through specialist rock pe*******on, ground-screw installation, and timber construction, we delivered the complete solution in-house along with Ground Screws Scotland. A challenging site, a very different structure, and a solution that starts from the ground up.

Yet another example on how groundscrews are the best solution for your garden room foundation system.
I just couldnt imagine this in concrete!!

Hard work lifting from the crew but a job well done!

An interesting site investigation yesterday to establish the ground conditions at the front of this property, which is currently experiencing subsidence.

Our objective was to expose and understand the existing foundations, investigate the soil profile at depth and assess how our ground screw foundation system could potentially be incorporated into an underpinning solution.

Using our excavator and specialist auger equipment, we were able to investigate below the existing foundation level and get a much clearer picture of the ground we're dealing with before developing the next stage of the solution.
This is where having experienced multi-trade operatives within our own team gives us a real advantage.

Complex projects don't always fit neatly into one trade or one standard construction method. Having the knowledge, equipment and practical experience to investigate the problem first allows us to develop solutions around the actual site conditions rather than simply making assumptions.

Ground Screws Scotland — foundations are sometimes about solving the problem before installing the solution.

11:39 → 13:00. Foundation complete.

These two photographs were taken just 1 hour and 21 minutes apart.

At 11:39 this morning, we started installing the ground screw foundation.

By 13:00, the full foundation was installed, accurately positioned, levelled and ready for the timber sub-base.

No excavation.
No concrete pour.
No waiting for concrete to cure.
No spoil to remove.
Minimal disruption to the garden.

Just a fast, clean and highly accurate foundation system, ready for the next stage of construction.

For projects like this, it's difficult to compare traditional foundation methods with the speed and efficiency that a professionally installed ground screw system can deliver.

81 minutes. From lawn to completed foundation.

That’s the advantage of Ground Screws Scotland.

🏃‍♂️ Jamie’s Running a Mountain Marathon for an Incredible Cause! 🏔️

Our mate Jamie Law—veteran, kit house builder, total legend, and all-around good guy—is taking on the Original Mountain Marathon this year to raise funds for the Lighthouse Charity.

If you don't know the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM), it’s no walk in the park. It’s two days of brutal, self-sufficient mountain navigation, carrying all gear, camping overnight, and tackling tough terrain. It’s a massive mental and physical test, but Jamie is passionate about supporting Lighthouse and the vital work they do in the construction industry.

Let’s help him smash his fundraising goal! Every bit helps.
