It’s been a little quieter than usual on socials this past week, and for a very good reason!

We’ve been celebrating my mum’s 80th birthday 🥳🎂 — a whole week of celebrations, family time and making some lovely memories. So I’ve been taking a little time away from the business to enjoy it!

🫁 One of the most important tools I carry isn’t a brush… it’s my respirator.

Every chimney I sweep contains fine soot, ash and dust that becomes airborne during the sweeping process. While you might only see a little bit of dust, there are tiny particles you can’t see that I definitely don’t want to be breathing in day after day.

That’s why wearing a properly fitted respirator is an essential part of my kit. It helps protect my lungs while allowing me to carry out every sweep safely and professionally.

Looking after chimneys is my job, but looking after my own health means I can keep providing a reliable service to customers across Faversham and the surrounding areas for years to come.

🐝 One of this week’s more unusual jobs! 🐝

This week we removed an old bees’ nest from a chimney, fitted a new chimney cowl, and gave the AGA flue a thorough sweep.

Just to reassure everyone – there were no live bees in the nest, so none were disturbed or harmed during the removal. Once the old nest was cleared, we fitted a cowl to help prevent unwanted visitors from making themselves at home again.

Regular chimney sweeping and fitting the right chimney cowl can help keep your flue working safely while reducing the chance of birds, bees and other debris causing blockages.

Well, it’s the end of one chapter and the start of another!

On Friday, I retired from the London Fire Brigade after 28 years of service. It’s been a privilege to help people throughout my career, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone I worked alongside over the years.

Now I’m excited to be putting all my time into Yew Cottage Chimney Services. Many of you already know me from sweeping your chimneys over the last few years, but from now on I’m your full-time local chimney sweep!

Whether it’s a routine sweep, a bird nest removal, or getting your stove ready for winter, I’m here to help with the same commitment to safety and friendly service that I’ve always believed in.

For those who don’t know me, I’m Mat, the owner of Yew Cottage Chimney Services.

My career began in 1990 when I joined the Royal Marines, serving with both 40 Commando and the Comacchio Group Royal Marines. The values of professionalism, attention to detail, and pride in doing a job properly have stayed with me throughout my life.

In 1998, I joined the London Fire Brigade, where I gained extensive experience in fire safety and protecting people’s homes and families.

With a passion for keeping chimneys safe and operating efficiently, I established Yew Cottage Chimney Services in 2021. My aim is simple: to provide a reliable, honest, and professional service that gives customers complete peace of mind.

Having lived in Faversham for over 30 years, I know the local area well and take great pride in serving the community I call home.
