A proper team effort over the last two days! 💪🌳

We reduced a large Leylandii hedge row by approximately a third, while also taking the inside face back as hard as possible to iron out all the bulges and leave it looking much tidier and more manageable.

Alongside that, we carried out a 1.5–2 metre reduction on an oak tree that was heavily intertwined and dense with Elaeagnus, making it a challenging but rewarding job.

We finished with felling a self seeded Sycamore growing up the side of the clients property, with a power line running through the crown.

A big shout-out to our latest recruit, Tom, who passed his climbing course last Saturday! 👏 We got him straight off the ground and into the action, where he removed a huge amount of the Elaeagnus while I concentrated on reducing the top of the oak. Meanwhile, Joe was running around the outside keeping everything moving smoothly. 🤘🏽

Great work from the whole team and a fantastic result for the customer. 🌳✅

Friday, our team worked alongside another contractor in Seaford for the local authority to safely remove a mature elm tree that had unfortunately succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease.

Dutch Elm Disease continues to threaten elm populations across Sussex, and early identification and responsible removal of infected trees are essential to help reduce its spread.

This was a challenging operation that required careful planning, teamwork, and safe dismantling techniques to protect the surrounding area, passing traffic and the utilities below.

If you have concerns about the health of a tree on your property, or would like professional advice on tree management, feel free to get in touch.

Another windblown tree job completed—this time involving a mature Leylandii that had started to exert significant pressure on a boundary pillar.

The tree had gradually been levering against the structure during recent windy conditions, leading to visible movement and concern over potential failure. Our approach focused on carefully reducing the load and releasing the mechanical pressure the tree was placing on the boundary wall. Once the load was safely eased off, the pillar was able to settle back into a more stable position without further displacement.

A good example of how gradual windthrow pressure from conifers like Leylandii can impact nearby hard structures, especially when growth is tight against boundaries. Careful staged reduction made all the difference in preventing a more sudden structural failure.

Recent windblown Macrocarpa that had failed into and destroyed part of the boundary fence. With the stem heavily loaded, careful assessment of compression and tension within the timber was essential throughout the dismantling process to ensure each cut could be carried out safely and in a controlled manner.

The tree was dismantled on site, with the main stem retained and shaped into a natural bench feature to give part of the tree a second life in the garden.

Photos show the damage, dismantling process, and finished result.

Fresh turf day 🌱

After weeks of staring at bare soil, the garden at this new build has finally come to life. There’s something really satisfying about rolling out fresh turf and instantly transforming a space from a construction site into a proper garden.

We started by properly preparing the ground - removing debris, levelling everything out, and improving the soil to give the turf the best possible start. Then it was all about careful laying, tight joints, and making sure everything was firm and even underfoot. Now it’s watered in and settling nicely. In a couple of weeks, it’ll be rooted down and ready for its first cut and the homeowners can start enjoying a lush, green lawn just in time for the warmer weather.

No shortcuts. No quick fixes. Just a lawn done right.

If you want a garden you can actually enjoy this summer, now’s the time to get it sorted.

We recently created a monolith and crown-raised the trees surrounding the playing fields at Buxted Church of England Primary School, following recommendations from East Sussex County Council.

A monolith tree is a dead or declining tree that has been carefully reduced to its main, branchless stem. This approach helps manage safety risks while preserving the tree as a valuable wildlife habitat. Rather than removing the tree entirely, it is retained as a standing structure that supports decay-dependent species and can remain in place for many years.

Key details:
*Purpose: Improves safety in public or urban spaces while supporting biodiversity

* Creation: The crown is removed, leaving a stable standing stem (typically 3–10 metres tall)

* Habitat value: Provides essential habitat for fungi, insects, and birds—up to 40% of woodland wildlife depends on decaying wood

* Appearance: Can be left natural or shaped with features such as a “coronet” cut to mimic natural breakage

* Management: Requires periodic monitoring to ensure ongoing safety as the tree continues to decay
