Worktop Restoration – From Tired and Worn to a Stunning, Durable Finish
These worktops were given a complete transformation rather than simply being coated over. The process involved careful preparation, progressive sanding and multiple coats of a high-performance 2-part varnish, bringing the natural character of the timber back to life while creating a deep, durable finish.
The existing worktops showed considerable wear, marks and surface deterioration. The first stage was therefore thorough preparation, removing ingrained dirt, old surface contamination and imperfections so we could work back towards a clean, sound surface.
We then worked through multiple grades of abrasive paper, starting with a more aggressive grade where necessary to level and remove imperfections, before progressively moving through finer grades. Each stage refined the surface further, removing the scratches left by the previous grade and gradually producing an exceptionally smooth, uniform substrate.
Particular attention was paid to the edges, corners, joints and difficult-to-reach areas, ensuring the finish wasn't simply good from a distance but consistent across the entire worktop.
Once the preparation was complete, the worktops were carefully cleaned and prepared for finishing. We then applied a professional 2-part varnish system, building the finish through multiple coats rather than relying on one heavy application.
Between coats, the surface was allowed to cure properly and then lightly de-nibbed and refined before the next coat was applied. This creates a much smoother finish and allows the coating to build progressively, producing the depth, clarity and uniformity visible in the finished photographs.
The result is a dramatic transformation. The timber's natural grain and variation have been brought back to life, while the multiple coats of 2-part varnish provide a rich, deep, hard-wearing protective surface with an exceptional level of sheen.
The finished worktops now have that deep, almost glass-like appearance, whilst retaining the character and warmth of the original timber.
A proper restoration is all about the preparation. The final finish is only as good as the surface beneath it — and by taking the time to sand through multiple grades, meticulously prepare the timber and build the coating with multiple properly applied coats, we were able to achieve this stunning result.
