⚓ MAY QUEEN – TIMBER COLLECTED & READY TO GO ⚓

A huge thank you to B J Taylor Ltd for supporting a fellow local business and lending me one of their trucks to collect all the timber needed for the ongoing restoration work on May Queen. 👏

It’s always great to see local businesses helping each other out, and the support is massively appreciated.

With the fresh timber now back at the workshop, it’s time to get stuck into the next stage — removing the rotten and deteriorated planking, using the originals as patterns where possible, machining the new timber and putting May Queen back together with fresh new planks. 🪵⚒️

Plenty of traditional shipwright work ahead, but this is exactly the sort of project we enjoy.

Another eventful day on the water! ⚓️🔧

Today I was working alongside Gareth from GD Electrical & Mechanical Services down at Penwith Marine Services in Penzance, assisting with wiring up the engine aboard Wandering Star and getting everything progressing nicely.

No sooner had we finished there, we were heading off on another emergency call-out, this time to Gleaner in Charlestown, Cornwall, to investigate an issue with the vessel’s Starlink system.

After a bit of fault-finding, we tracked the problem down to something deceptively simple — a broken USB-C cable. Sometimes it’s the smallest component that causes the biggest headache!

Another varied day of marine electrical and mechanical work, fault-finding and supporting vessels around the South West. Always a pleasure working alongside Gareth and GD Electrical & Mechanical Services.

A real contrast of work today — and a good example of the variety that comes with marine shipwright work. ⚓️🔨

The morning started at Royal William Yard, working aboard a beautiful Princess yacht in very different surroundings… before heading across to Sutton Harbour Marina and getting stuck into a commercial fishing boat (Kingsman).

This afternoon’s job was down in the tiller room, framing out the space and fitting a new false floor, creating a solid, practical working surface while still working around the vessel’s existing steering gear, pipework and structure.

From luxury yachts to hard-working fishing vessels, every boat brings a completely different challenge — and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about this trade.
