🌿 Great planting design is about so much more than choosing plants that look beautiful.

A garden can look fantastic in its first summer… but what about in autumn? Winter? Or three years from now?

For me, successful planting is about structure, seasonality and knowing when to be bold.

It’s considering how plants will work together as they mature, creating rhythm through repetition, making sure there’s interest throughout the seasons and choosing planting that works with the scale and architecture of the garden.

Because the best planting schemes don’t just look good when everything is in flower.

They get better with time.

In our latest Plan B Garden Design blog, we explore **Planting Design at Scale: Structure, Seasonality and Drama** — and why thoughtful planting can completely change the way a garden looks and feels.

A highly valued service we offer at Plan B is our Garden Reset.

We completed this lovely Essex garden 18 months ago, and it has matured beautifully. It was simply time for a light-touch reset to tidy, refresh and keep everything looking its best.

Because even the best-designed gardens benefit from a little care as they grow. 🌿

Blu decided to help out on our irrigation project… although we think he was more interested in discovering that Techline Drip Pipe makes a very expensive cat bed! 😂🐾

Supplied by 💧(the pipe, not the cat 😂)

And a little reminder — irrigation, when set up correctly, can still be used during a hosepipe ban.

Thanks for your help, Blu! 🐈‍⬛💚

The Diary of a Garden Designer

Irrigation: More Than Just Water

Today was all about fine-tuning an irrigation system. It’s easy to think watering a garden is simply a case of turning on the irrigation, but every garden has its own unique balance.

Soil type, sun exposure, prevailing winds, and the needs of individual plants all have to be considered. Some plants thrive with very little water, while others need consistent moisture.

Getting that balance right means healthier plants, less wasted water, and a garden that’s better prepared for increasingly unpredictable weather.

Designing a Wildlife Pond

A large part of the day was spent preparing a client specification for a wildlife pond. This isn’t just about digging a hole and filling it with water — it’s about creating a habitat that will support nature for years to come.

The work included detailed drawings, following recognised good-practice principles, and producing a buying guide so the client knows exactly what’s needed to build a thriving, natural pond that attracts everything from dragonflies to frogs.

Exploring New Technology

One of the most enjoyable parts of running a modern design business is keeping up with new technology.

I spent some time exploring a new feature that’s recently been added to software I already use. If it performs as promised, it could improve the way I present designs, communicate with clients, and streamline parts of the design process.

Investing time in learning new tools is all part of continually improving the service we offer.

The Business Behind the Gardens

Not every day is spent designing beautiful gardens. Like every small business owner, there’s a steady stream of administration that keeps everything running smoothly.

Quotes, invoices, supplier orders, emails, scheduling, accounts, and planning all happen behind the scenes. It’s rarely the glamorous side of the job, but it’s essential.

Good administration allows projects to run efficiently and gives clients confidence that every detail is being looked after.

🏡 **A truly luxurious garden isn't about adding more features... it's about creating spaces that flow.**

The best gardens don't happen by accident.

They're designed with the same care and thought as the house itself—creating a natural journey from one outdoor room to the next, with every path, terrace and seating area having a purpose.

At Plan B Garden Design, we don't just design beautiful gardens; we create outdoor spaces that feel like a seamless extension of your home.

From carefully considered sightlines to perfectly positioned entertaining spaces, every detail is planned to ensure your garden is as enjoyable to live in as it is to admire.

✨ A luxury garden should:
🌿 Flow effortlessly from space to space
🏡 Feel connected to your home
🍃 Offer places to relax, entertain and unwind
👀 Look just as impressive from inside the house as it does outdoors

Our latest blog explores why thinking like an architect—not just a gardener—creates outdoor spaces that stand the test of time.

People often ask me what my own garden looks like.

The answer? It's probably not what you'd expect...

I love rustic, reclaimed and lower-maintenance gardens that feel as though they've always belonged. Natural materials, weathered timber, aged stone and planting that softens the space over time always win over anything too perfect.

Here's a little Home Project from last year that brought some of those ideas to life. It's proof that you don't always need a complete redesign to make a space feel more inviting—sometimes it's the smaller, thoughtful changes that have the biggest impact.

Your garden should work for you, not the other way around. It should be somewhere you enjoy spending time, rather than another job on the to-do list.

What's your style?

🌿 Modern and minimalist?
🪵 Rustic and reclaimed?
🌸 Cottage garden?
🌾 Wildlife-friendly?
✨ Or something completely different?

I'd love to know in the comments.
