Front Door

Replacement front door with stained leaded glass and Architectural hardware fitted to a 1930's property in Durham City Centre.

The door was fitted a couple of weeks ago and it's been the first chance I've had to call today to take some photos since the decorator painted the door.

It is beautiful. Perfectly fitting the 30's property. The door is at the same home I fitted a kitchen for in an earlier post.

It was decided the side lights in the arched frame would be changed later and the frame painted once the door was fitted in place to see whether to go for either stained leaded glass or a more plain glass. Either way it will look even more stunning once I get the frame glazing done.

Sliding Sash Window repairs.

There's a lot of work goes on at Hall Carpentry that I don't post about. Every year I always do a couple or so of repair jobs, be it windows, door frames etc jobs before the painter decorates the exterior woodwork. This work is known as prior painting work and something I've done year on year since an apprentice. Rotten timber is cut out and new timber is machined to match the existing and spliced in for an invisible repair.

This job is one of those completed yesterday in Durham City to a modern sliding sash window.

The rotted sill cut out and replaced with a new one in hardwood and the mullions spliced. The window is pointed with traditional mortar pointing (not foam as it had been) and the new timber primed with proper primer ready for the painter in the next couple of weeks.

Architectural Sunscreens

Bespoke sunscreens made and fitted for a period property in the heart of Durham City.

There are four sections and are infinitely adjustable. Any number of screens can be fitted or removed and slid to any desired position when needed. The screens can be removed completely and stored when not required.
External sunscreens prevent solar heat from reaching the glass, effectively cooling the room.

A contemporary design, the screens are made from oak, the same as the louvres i fitted in the bell tower of a local church, and in keeping with the local architecture. Over time they will 'silver' the same as the louvres, turning a grey patina and blend perfectly with the property.

A very interesting property which was once the former home of a professional footballer.

Oak Internal Doors

Doors are all now fitted throughout in the same home I made the Oak combination frame for at Chester le street in the previous post.

There's quite a few of them and they look faboulous with some wonderful grain on show.

I've also done the wood finishing to the doors which is a hand-rubbed oil finish which brings out the depth of the grain beautifully.

Oak Door Set

Fabulous oak door set with sidelights completed this week in a lovely home by the Riverside in Chester le street.

Beautiful contemporary combination frame, handmade in the workshop from selected European oak. Perfectly proportioned it is constructed with mortice & tenon joinery, full height toughened glazed sidelights and double doors.

Designed to open up the room and allow as much light as possible into the piano room which leads off the hallway. It replaces a dark panelled frame with single door.

I am also currently replacing all the 6 panel internal doors with "Daytona" Oak doors in the property. There are 17 in total which look stunning beside the combination frame.

The floor is going to be tiled by the tiler from the front door, down the hallway and into the piano room and having seen the tiles the floor is going to look fabulous.

I've got a very nice joinery manufacturing job to bring you later this week that I'm busy with but thought I would share a few more handrail photos from the staircase restoration as it's something you won't see very often.

The photos show what is known as 'Chatoyance' which is a hologram effect of the Mahogany handrail. It's rare and beautifully brought out by the careful French Polishing. Very pleased with it.

Staircase Restoration

The restoration of the period staircase is now complete. I've French polished the Continous Wreathed handrail and it is truly stunning. Perfectly blending the handmade Volute, which now welcomes you up the stairs.

There's an art to french polishing.I used to work for a very high end joinery company who employed their own full time french polishers and it was a privilege to work alongside them. It is a real skill looking at timber and knowing when to stain, how much stain, type of stain aswell as how to apply it. Then of course selecting the French polish and the skilled technique of application.

I hope you have enjoyed following the progress as I went along. It's quite a unique and remarkable restoration to restore the integrity and elegance of the staircase for it to be enjoyed for generations to come.

The before photos are in an earlier post which show the transformation.

Balustrade and Understairs storage completed today in Durham City centre.

Stunning contemporary two-tone balustrade with oak newels, handrails and newel caps with painted spindles. The spindles were pre-finished in the workshop for sharp clean lines as they meet the oak. The oak has an oil finish, perfectly applied by hand.

The understairs storage completes this entrance hallway beautifully.
Handmade in the workshop it is quite substantial with a lot of storage from its push to open drawers. Another very nice project.

Current project

The current project I'm busy with is a house refurbishment in Durham City which is well underway and coming along very nicely. I was planning on posting about it as a I went along but will wait until it's finished. Another very nice job. The new doors, architraves & skirtings are all done and the workshop is full of cabinets, drawers and stairparts all ready to start fitting.

In the meantime a little update on the stair restoration.

The decorator has painted the spindles and the cut string and has made a superb job of it. The stairs are looking very nice indeed. The many hours spent restoring it, over 3 storeys, being well spent.

I've got the handrail to polish but theres still a lot of work going on in this grand property so that work will be done last once the other trades have finished their works. The sample of polished handrail I've done against the white looks fabulous so look forward to getting that done.

Another very busy week at Hall Carpentry.

Brand new Victorian 4 panel doors fitted in Durham City with beautiful Ebonised architectural door k***s.

The doors look fabulous in this period home.

As always, these are fitted properly and any frame repairs that are required, such as where the old hinges have been off previously fitted doors are always carried out at the same time for a professional finish when I fit doors.

With regard to doors I can supply any period of door new. From Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, 1930's through to modern contemporary.
