Our site team on the Willmott Dixon Catterick Garrison LUF project continues to make excellent progress as the project enters its final stages of construction.

Our groundworks package is progressing well, with the team currently delivering the external hard landscaping and paving works to the plaza ramps.

A huge well done to the site teams, led by Graham Stobbs, our Contracts Supervisor, and Willmott Dixon’s Senior Building Manager, Chandler Webster. Their close collaboration and teamwork are ensuring the works are being delivered safely, efficiently and on programme.

A fantastic team effort - great work, everyone!

Working in partnership with DurhamWorks and the Bowmer + Kirkland site team, we recently welcomed a group of school leavers to the Castle Leazes student accommodation project in Newcastle for a behind the scenes site tour.

The afternoon began in the site offices, where the B+K team gave an overview of the project, alongside an insight into the wide range of careers available across the construction industry and some practical advice on how to get started.
We then headed out onto site, giving the group the opportunity to see first hand the scale and complexity of the project and the many different skills and roles involved in bringing it to life.

It was a fantastic afternoon and a great opportunity to showcase the exciting career opportunities available within our industry, while giving the next generation a valuable insight into life on a live construction site.

A huge thank you to DurhamWorks for reaching out and helping to make the visit possible, and to the B+K site team for taking the time to facilitate such an engaging and informative afternoon.

We hope the visit has inspired some future careers in construction!

We were honoured to be part of the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by Kier and the 8th Battalion The Rifles at Hartlepool United FC.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a commitment to ensure that those who serve or have served in the UK Armed Forces, along with their families and the bereaved, are treated with fairness, respect, and recognition in the communities, economy, and society they have dedicated themselves to protecting.

At Wyn, we are proud to support the Covenant and everything it represents. We are committed to ensuring that no member of the Armed Forces community experiences disadvantage or discrimination because of their service.

A huge thank you to Terry Hanlon, Kier Social Value Lead, for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful occasion, to Captain Dave Ridley of the 8th Battalion The Rifles, and a special thank you to the Minden House Buglers, whose outstanding performance made the event even more memorable.

Apprentice Intake 2026 👷‍♂️

We’ve now concluded our annual apprentice work experience programme and are delighted to welcome 11 new apprentices to the Wyn family.
This brings our total number of apprentices to 30, across a range of disciplines including Engineering, Joinery, Groundworks and Plant Operations.

This year, we’ve strengthened our Engineering team with three new apprentices. Josh Ellison and Mason Ellison are already out on site gaining valuable experience, while Olly Erskine will begin his engineering career with us in the coming weeks. All three will start their Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship at New College Durhamin early September.
We’re also pleased to welcome Ryan Greener, John Pegg, Owen Baker, Jayden Carr and Jacob Tilley as Groundworker Apprentices after successfully completing their onsite work experience. Several of the lads are already on site learning their trade and will begin their Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship at Derwentside College in September.
Last, but certainly not least, Reggie Cowie has joined the Wyn family as a Carpenter & Joiner Apprentice, following in the footsteps of his dad, Ben Cowie, our Contracts Manager. Reggie will also begin his apprenticeship at New College Durham in early September.

A huge thank you to all of our Wyn site teams for hosting this year’s work experience programme and to our apprentice mentors for their continued support and guidance. Our Operations Director, John Osborne, attended the Bowmer + Kirkland Supply Chain Event & Awards at the Tyneside Cinema on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle.

The Bowmer + Kirkland team delivered a series of informative and thought-provoking presentations, covering the company’s overall performance and financial position, the regional pipeline of work, Health & Safety, Quality, Social Value, and much more.

The morning concluded with the annual awards, celebrating the companies and individuals who have gone above and beyond in delivering projects to the highest standards across the region.
We were delighted to receive several nominations and are incredibly proud to have been awarded Best Performing Contractor – Social Value for the second consecutive year. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering meaningful social value alongside the Bowmer + Kirkland teams and making a positive impact within the communities where we work.
We were also thrilled to see two of our Contracts Supervisors recognised for their outstanding achievements:
🏆 Shaun Ellison was named Supervisor of the Year for the Castle Leazes project. This marks Shaun’s second consecutive win—a fantastic and well-deserved recognition of his commitment, professionalism, and dedication to consistently delivering the highest standards on every project.

Congratulations to Shaun and Gary on these fantastic achievements, and thank you to the Bowmer + Kirkland team for hosting another excellent event.

Finally, congratulations to all of this year’s award winners. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership and delivering excellence together.

Safety remains a key focus for the team at the St Helen’s Primary School project in Hartlepool, where we have been working closely with the Galliford Try site team to review the interface between mechanically operated plant and pedestrians on site.

As part of this ongoing safety review, we have been assessing how plant and people interactions are currently managed and identifying opportunities to further enhance workforce protection. This led us to explore a range of proximity detection solutions available on the market, with the Zonr system emerging as a strong fit for our requirements.

We welcomed Ben Sturgess from Zonr to site to demonstrate their innovative plant proximity detection solution. The system is fully wireless, quick to install, easily transferable between vehicles, and can be configured to suit different site activities and risk profiles.
During the demonstration, Ben installed the system on one of our 14-tonne 360° tracked excavators. We then simulated several work area incursions to test the technology. The system performed exceptionally well, providing both visual and audible alerts to the excavator operator while simultaneously warning the operative wearing the armband tag that they had entered a restricted work zone.
Following the site demonstration, Ben delivered a series of training sessions covering system setup and operation. He also introduced us to the Zonr online portal, which enables users to manage hardware, monitor activity, and capture valuable data for analysis and continuous improvement.

Many thanks to Ben Sturgess and the Zonr team for facilitating the demonstration, and to Iain Briggs, Project Manager at Galliford Try, for his continued support in exploring innovative solutions to enhance workforce safety, including the ongoing trial of a Zonr base kit on the project.

Continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration are helping us create safer working environments for everyone on site.

Social Value Community Projects

As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a positive and lasting legacy in the communities where we work, we recently partnered with Hannah Blenkinsop, Assistant Social Value Manager at Willmott Dixon, to deliver two impactful community projects linked to the ongoing developments at the Rivergreen Centre and the Catterick Garrison LUF Project.

Our first project took place at Silver Tree Primary School and Nursery, where we installed a new timber edged gravel footpath connecting the playground to the school’s sports field. The new pathway provides pupils and staff with a cleaner, safer, and more clearly defined route between the two areas.

The second project was delivered at Mowbray Academy within its on site nature conservation area. Here, we constructed a new tarmac footpath to create smooth, level access routes around key areas of the reserve, helping to improve accessibility for students, staff, and visitors.

A huge thank you to Hannah Blenkinsop for inviting Wyn to collaborate on these valuable community initiatives. We’d also like to recognise our dedicated Wyn teams for delivering high quality work that we hope will benefit these schools and their communities for many years to come.

Work Experience & Apprentice Intake 2026

Investing in the future workforce through apprenticeships remains a key priority for our business, both now and for the years ahead.

We are well underway with our 2026 apprentice intake and have already completed a number of interviews and on-site work experience weeks for young people looking to begin their careers in Civil Engineering across the region.
The work experience programme is an important part of our recruitment process. It gives candidates valuable first-hand experience of the groundworks industry before committing to a career path, while also allowing us to see their punctuality, attitude, attentiveness, and willingness to learn in a live site environment.
Our interviews and work experience weeks will continue throughout June and July across our sites, with successful candidates receiving offers ahead of college courses commencing in September.

We are also pleased to welcome:
* Apprentice Engineer Josh Ellison
* Groundworker apprentices Brandon Wilson and George Smith

In addition, we have secured Plant Operator apprenticeships for recently qualified groundworker apprentices:
* Callum Atkinson
* Joseph Kirtley
* Ben Herdman

This brings our total apprentice cohort to 25 apprentices.

A huge thank you to the Wyn site teams for hosting the work experience weeks and to our apprentice mentors for their continued support and guidance.

We would also like to thank the teams at Derwentside College, New College Durham and Capital 4 Training for their ongoing support with apprentice training and further education.

Investing in the training and upskilling of our people remains one of our key priorities in delivering business success. Over the past few months, we’ve worked closely with our training partners to ensure critical training has been delivered efficiently, both on and off site.

A special thank you to Stephen from Keir Safety Solutions, who has been instrumental in delivering a range of onsite courses including CAT & Genny, Banksman, Face Fit, and Emergency Spill Kit training. Looking ahead, we also have a programme of Abrasive Wheels, Manual Handling, and Fire Marshal training planned in the coming months.

We’d also like to recognise the fantastic support from the team at Rhino Training Ltd, who have been working hard delivering trade, supervisor, and plant NVQs, while also supporting us with maintaining our training matrix and managing our CITB training grant claims. A huge thank you to Fiona and Abbie for their invaluable support throughout.

Having reliable, knowledgeable training partners is essential in helping us maintain a skilled, compliant, and capable workforce that can continue delivering projects to the highest standards. We would highly recommend both Keir Safety Solutions and Rhino Training Ltd to anyone looking for high-quality training support.
