I was working downstairs at this property today. Have a look at this gas line that feeds upstairs 🤦‍♂️ leaving the meter box in 22 and then transitions to 15 immediately!!! Unless it is going up to supply a candle(all joking aside maybe a hob) I’d guess that line is undersized, par for the course over here right enough.

Undersized gas leads to “under gasing” which results in incomplete combustion. The result of this is soot build up, the worse it gets the worse the combustion process suffers. Mainly due to partially blocked air ways and a dirty heat exchanger.

I know copper is getting really expensive but when doing a job you surely just add it on to the total price rather than give a price and try and keep it as cheap as possible. I don’t know you sleep at night!

Was at this one today, Help help my boiler isn’t working!!! I wonder why?! That is the spark/ionisation electrode that was compromised, it ended up snapping when I was changing it for new.

Not only does it provide the spark to ignite the gas initially but once the flame is established it detects it and tells the gas valve to open fully to allow full flow of gas. A simple wee part, easy enough to replace and relatively cheap but when it stops working your boiler will do nothing.

What usually happens is that over time of being heated the spacing between the prongs gets wider until eventually it then stops arcing. Occasionally you can heat it up and bend it back into place.

Cold months are not far away now so boiler repairs a plenty en route.

Hello Folks,

Not been posting much lately as there is only so many times I can show a cleaned out heat exchanger 🤦‍♂️

I have a few coming up, upgrading gas lines, which could be educationally so I’ll show them but I heard this today and it knocked me sideways.

If you have a young guy(apprentice) or just a labourer then I have found the best take down I’ve heard in a long time. Next time he makes a mistake tell him/her;

“Aww Jesus, you’re about as much use as Anne Franks drum kit!”

Took me a few seconds as well 😂 😂 😂

Real life day to day plumbing!

The Landlord just wanted a shower that worked, tidy up as best as I can and put the shower head on the adjacent wall.

Now am I happy with the end result, not particularly! If I had my way we would of been re routing supply cable and pipe so that they were hidden within the shower itself but as I was on a budget sometimes you just need to grin and bear it

Just another boring day of services for me. Started off with this Ariston(not my favourite boiler) but the heat exchanger cleaned up not too bad, bar getting the polish out.

Unless the boiler has a fan pressure test that tells me whether it needs cleaned out or not I always strip it down and clean it as best as I can, namely because;

A cleaner heat exchanger not only gives you cleaner combustion,thus higher efficiency, but at the same time I’d argue it gives your boiler a longer lifespan.

In response to all the comments on my recent post about the two boilers and undersized gas line. this is what an undersized gas line can result in so it is vital that it is done properly!!!

I was at an interesting one today. For context, I was at a property to service two boilers, a 30KW and a 29KW.

I went straight to the meter and noticed they had the outlet in 22mm, to supply 59KW 🤦‍♂️ if both boilers were very close to the meter you’d maybe get away with it.

For engineers out there the photographs are as follows;

1st OP at meter

2nd OP at farther away boiler

3rd OP at farther away boiler with second boiler in operation

Needless to say a call to gas safe was needed as I was panicking I would have to shut them down until gas line had been upgraded. Now, according to gas safe;

The line as it stands, as long as FGA and gas rate at each boiler is ok, is classed as NCS. I thought AR at minimum but I was wrong! Enables me to make the customer aware and book in to come back and upgrade the gas line.

No matter how long you have been in this game there is always more to learn! Thought I’d share this incase any other engineer runs into a similar circumstance.

This is why I always go on about doing gas line calculations properly, it really burns my custard when I see this kind of thing 🤦‍♂️

One of those afternoons, silly wee complications in this line of work do happen. In hindsight I’d imagine the boiler was fitted first as it was not possible to access FGA/flue integrity test points without some butchery to the top panel above 🤦‍♂️
