It’s always good when the steel frame goes up and the big glazing installed! Projecting ridge beam will carry an angled roof covering to prevent too much of the low evening sun glare and provide a bit of protection on the decking on those changeable weather days on the west coast.

Planning approval granted today for some fancy new wings to this cute little self build dwelling on Skye. Love a red roof and love it even more when the planners allow two more red roofs to match!

Link sections allow a bit of separation between each volume and make it easier to protect from the weather, preventing complex roof junctions and creating a nice collection of smaller structures and opportunities for natural light to filter through the home. A little protected decking courtyard area is an added bonus with a site that gets exposed to some pretty extreme weather.

The material palette for this building is very rural - taking inspiration from agricultural buildings and stone from the rugged landscapes. The tones darker for the link sections to give more of a visual recess playing with shadows and darker finishes.

Replicating window forms from the original building within a new extension can tie together two differing styles of building. The original stone barn had a large opening at the gable end which became the tall triple window at the head of the restaurant. This feature was replicated in the extension and the link section with a double window of the same dimensions.

The original barn also has narrow slot windows or ‘arrow slits’ which have been replicated in the extension in store rooms which need minimal natural light.

Reflecting on the last year’s achievements and projects coming to life…this has to be one of the highlights!

Extending the 200 year old barn turned restaurant was something I wanted to approach with a gentle connection to the existing building and a soft exterior finish to remain subservient to the main building whilst still providing the internal spaces required by the client.

The link section to the first floor is the only part of the extension touching the stone wall of the barn and provides two points of connection - one for the public and one for the staff. With glazing at both ends of the link it gives an even lighter connection visually.

Problem solving is something we pride ourselves on at HEGER Architecture & Design. Nothing is impossible and there is always a solution that addresses the varying factors in design.
