Something new is taking shape at RADIX…

We’ve been busy behind the scenes, and it’s nearly time to introduce something a little different.

Designed with the RADIX mindset. Built around smarter foundations. And created with a new idea in mind…

45 production days.

That's how much time switching from concrete to screw piles took out of the site programme on one recent BESS project. Roughly half the time allocated to the foundation scope.

Most tender comparisons will never see it. They price the foundation per pile, per plinth, per
battery unit. They don't price the days.

On battery storage, the days are where the value is:
→ Fewer site days: lower site management and preliminaries costs
→ Milestones hit sooner: investor drawdowns and contractor payments released faster
→ The asset energised earlier: revenue pulled forward from the day it goes live

The sum is short. Daily site revenue × days saved. Put it next to the difference in foundation
package cost.

So why does almost nobody do it? Because the foundation package is usually bought by the
contractor on package cost, while the value of the days lands with the developer and the
investor. The person buying the foundation is rarely the person who benefits from the
programme.

Across the 32 BESS projects RADIX has delivered, the pattern holds: the saving shows up
in the programme long before it shows up anywhere else.

Price the pile, by all means. But price the days first.

Three countries, three projects, one busy month for RADIX.

In his latest international update, RADIX's Christian Alexander shares news from our teams working across Saudi Arabia, Italy and Hungary.

From early-stage foundation testing for luxury hospitality developments in Saudi Arabia to BESS installations in Italy and Hungary, it's been a busy period for our international operations.

Each project brings its own challenges, but our commitment to delivering engineered foundation solutions remains the same, wherever we're working.

Great to see our work with Abertay University featured!

We've really enjoyed working with Emir on a project exploring the environmental impact of different foundation solutions.

It's always rewarding to support the next generation of engineers, particularly when their research can make a real difference to how we approach future projects.

A big thank you to Emir and the team at Abertay University for a fantastic collaboration!

🌍 How can a Master's project help tackle a real-world sustainability challenge?

For MSc Geotechnical Engineering student Emir Tashbaev, it meant working with Dundee engineering company RADIX to develop a carbon calculator capable of measuring the whole-life embodied carbon of foundation systems.

Using real-world case studies, the research found that RADIX screw pile foundations had a lower overall carbon impact than equivalent concrete solutions, while providing the company with a practical tool to support future projects.

The collaboration has helped RADIX better compare the environmental impact of different foundation options, while giving Emir the opportunity to apply his expertise to a live industry challenge with real-world value.

Not a bad way to round off the week…

13 screw piles. Two days. One 32m temporary bridge.

At Bedford Lock on the River Great Ouse, RADIX worked alongside Beaver Bridges to provide the foundations for a temporary access bridge capable of supporting vehicle loads of up to 44 tonnes.

With saturated ground, high groundwater levels, mature trees and a public riverside setting to contend with, this wasn’t a straightforward installation.

Our team installed 13 extendable 89mm screw piles, with additional helical sections helping achieve the required performance in the challenging ground conditions.

The foundations were completed in just two days, ready for the bridge to be lifted into position.

And when the works are finished? The screw piles can be removed, leaving no permanent foundations behind.

A good example of what screw piles can do when temporary access, challenging ground and a sensitive site all come together.

Most ground mounted solar projects buy their foundations from one supplier and their racking from another, then find out on site whether the two agree with each other.

RADIX supplies both.

Ground screw foundations and the SolarMount racking system are engineered to work together, so the array is designed as one structure rather than assembled from two.

SolarMount is UK manufactured, corrosion resistant and carries a 25 year warranty. Paired with screw foundations it installs across sloping, soft and uneven ground without cut and fill earthworks, goes in year round because nothing has to cure, and comes fully removable at the end of the array's life, which matters both for planning and for what happens to the land afterwards.

Design, ground testing, foundations, racking and installation, from one team.

At Trefawr Farm in the Brecon valleys, an exposed hillside, rocky ground and an operational sheep farm all shaped the foundation design for a new community solar array.

Working with Vital Energi, RADIX designed, supplied, installed and tested 360 ground screw foundations. Pre-installation pull testing confirmed the system could achieve the required minimum uplift resistance of 15kN per foundation, a key requirement for a site exposed to significant wind loading.

Using compact installation equipment, our team completed all 360 foundations in nine days, with minimal disruption to the surrounding farmland and livestock.

What does RADIX actually do?

It is a fair question, and the answer tends to depend on where you meet us. Some people know us as a manufacturer and stockist. Others as the design and testing team on a solar scheme, or as the installer on a BESS site.

Core Foundations is a new brochure that puts all of it in one place: the engineering thinking behind the systems, the capability across solar, battery storage, infrastructure, modular and residential, and the projects that back it up.

Worth a read if you are specifying foundations, or if you have only ever seen one part of what we do.
