Last year we did the property next door. This year the neighbours came knocking. Funny how that works.

Full re-slate in Spanish slate, aluminium seamless gutters, two new uPVC dormer windows, chimney remedial work and all leadwork replaced. One of Dumfries's finest streets looking exactly as it should.

Rockcliffe, overlooking the Solway. A Victorian property that had earned itself a proper overhaul.

Old slates out, Brazilian slate in. Two failing copper flat roofs replaced with fibreglass. Decorative eaves and gable timbers stripped back and rebuilt. All leadwork renewed. New gutters throughout. The sort of job where the before photos make you wince and the after photos make you want to show everyone.

Job done.

Not every new build has to look like every other new build.

When the client on this Dalbeattie property asked for profiled metal roof cladding rather than a traditional slate finish, we were very happy to oblige. It is a bold choice, and the result speaks for itself: clean vertical lines, a deep anthracite finish, and a roof that makes a proper statement.

The pitched sections are clad in profiled metal sheeting throughout, with three Velux roof windows letting light into the space below. The lower flat roof section is finished in fibreglass, giving a seamless, watertight result that will not give anyone any trouble for decades. Aluminium gutters and downpipes complete the job, chosen for their durability and clean appearance alongside the metal cladding.

Roofing has come a long way. This is what it looks like when someone is not afraid to do something a bit different.

The 1970s gave us a lot of things. Flared trousers. Avocado bathrooms. And an awful lot of bungalows whose roofs have now quietly reached the end of the road.

This one in Castle Douglas was well overdue a proper going over. The old tiles came off, and in went a full set of Double Roman tiles, a profile that has stood the test of time for good reason. Chunky and built to handle whatever a Dumfries and Galloway weather can throw at them.

While we were up there, we replaced the fascia and soffits, fitted two new dormer windows and three Velux roof windows, and finished the whole job off with new guttering. What started as a tired seventies bungalow finished up looking like a completely different building.

Sometimes a roof is just a roof. And sometimes it is the whole personality of a house.

Some roofs only need a bit of TLC. This one needed the full works!

When we got up on this gorgeous wee cottage in Auchencairn, it was clear the original roof had long since had its day. Rotten sarking, failing timber joists, and an entrance canopy doing its level best to head south. Everything came off. Clean slate, so to speak.

New structural timbers went in, followed by fresh sarking boards to give us a solid deck to work from. Then came the good bit: Brazilian random slates, laid in diminishing courses from eaves to ridge. For anyone not deep in the world of roofing, that means the slates graduate in size as they climb the roof, bigger at the bottom and smaller at the top. It is traditional, it is beautiful, and it is the kind of detail that makes a cottage in Dumfries and Galloway look exactly as it should.

Auchencairn, you have been a pleasure. This one will still be going strong long after we have retired.
