BBC Radio 4 Long Wave Service Closure – Important Information for Customers

The BBC Radio 4 Long Wave (LW) service was permanently switched off at 01:00 BST on Saturday, 27 June 2026, bringing to an end almost 100 years of long-wave broadcasting in the UK.

This change affects more than just radio listeners. The Long Wave frequency also carried the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) signal, which was used by many older electricity meters, including Economy 7 and Economy 10 meters, to automatically switch between peak and off-peak electricity tariffs.

If your property still has an RTS-controlled electricity meter, it may no longer operate correctly. As a result, your meter may:

* Remain permanently in the peak or off-peak mode.
* Fail to switch your heating and hot water on or off at the correct times.

If you experience any issues with your heating, hot water, or electricity tariff switching and believe you may have an older RTS meter, If you believe you have an RTS-controlled meter, we strongly recommend that you contact your electricity supplier or metering company as soon as possible to arrange for your meter to be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.
