With all the talk today about plug-in solar panels, I just want to add a bit of real-world perspective from an electrical point of view ⚡️

Yes — the idea is great. Making renewable energy more accessible is a positive step forward.

However, in practice, it’s not quite as simple as “buy it, plug it in, and save money.”

In the UK, any form of generation should be notified to your local network operator, and more importantly, your existing electrical installation needs to be suitable to handle it.

The concern is that people will start buying these systems online and plugging them into older electrics without:
• Proper testing
• Load and circuit checks
• Verifying protection devices (RCDs/MCBs)
• Ensuring the installation can safely accommodate backfeed

That’s where the risk comes in — not the solar itself, but how it’s installed and integrated.

Without the right checks, you’re potentially increasing the risk of faults or even electrical fires.

Renewables are the future — no doubt about it — but we need to make sure they’re introduced safely and responsibly into people’s homes.

If you’re considering plug-in solar, speak to a qualified electrician first. It’s not worth cutting corners when it comes to safety.
