Sea Spring Seeds

Sea Spring Seeds A vegetable seed company run by gardeners for gardeners. We sell seed of a fantastic range of the very best tasting varieties.

We specialise in chillies and tomaotes. Sea Spring Seeds is a vegetable seed company run by gardeners for gardeners. It is based at Sea Spring Farm, a specialist nursery overlooking the English Channel in West Dorset. The business is owned and managed by us, Michael and Joy Michaud, along side our other enterprises: Sea Spring Plants (selling chilli plug plants), Peppers by Post (growing and selli

ng fresh chillies through the post) and Sea Spring Photos (a photo library for vegetable growing). After working for decades in agriculture and horticulture, we started our own business in 1989, first growing vegetables for local shops and restaurants. We gradually became interested in chillies, eventually establishing Peppers by Post, in 1994 – Britain's first company growing and selling fresh chillies through the post. We then began hunting for new chillies in immigrant shops and allotments, where we found naga morich, a Bangladeshi landrace from which we developed the Dorset Naga, one of the hottest chillies in the world (see http://www.dorsetnaga.com). Since then we have developed several new chilli varieties

Sea Spring seeds now sells a wide range of vegetable seeds, concentrating on selling the best varieties available.

Harvesting some absolutely delicious carrots at the moment. We direct sowed the seed in early December into the tunnel after the tomatoes had been cleared; and we started harvesting at the end of March.

The variety is called Speedy. It bulks up and colours up very quickly, so is ideal for over wintering. They will all be eaten before we need the tunnel for our summer crops.

So we have wonderful news.

Apero, in my opinion, is one of the best flavoured tomatoes there is. The fruit also have a firm texture (which I really like), and don't go soft or split. Strongly recommend it. Sadly, it was lost to us after Brexit – we were told the French company that produced the seed didn't want to export to the UK – and we haven't been able to sell it for years.

Well now it is back! We're so pleased.

Apero is one of the best tasting and best looking cherry tomato there is; and it is consistently a winner on the showbench!

December and January is the time to get ready for next year. All our greenhouses and tunnels are emptied completely and pressure washed. Later we will disinfect them all.

These greenhouses have just been washed; I love how sparkling clean they are!

Its getting towards the end of November, but we still have some pretty good looking chilli plants.

This is a new variety that we are proud to have developed. In every taste test we did this summer, including informal ones with groups having a tour of our nursery, it has come out top by a long way. It really is delicious, a real "head turner", with a sweet, strong, amazing tomato flavour. We have named it Red Fan, and should be selling seeds this autumn.

This time last week I was packing up my stall after three days at the Malvern Autumn Show. I finished packing in the dark, and got home after midnight... these shows are great, I meet a lot of customers and really enjoy them, but they are exhausting and very hard work!

Just checked our kale. Although it looks really good, on closer examination we had caterpillars. We had the crop covered with tendamesh all summer so the butterflies couldn't get in to lay eggs. But strong winds early September blew them off, and we didn't put it back on as we thought the butterflies had gone... we were wrong.

If you like beefsteak heritage tomatoes you really should try Ovi's Romanian Giant tomato. The fruit are enormous, weighing between 500 and 1 kg each, and very good tasting. And unlike many heritage varieties, the plants just keep on producing. It is now the middle of September and our plants are still healthy and producing new fruit.

Ever wondered why hosepipes get so twisted? Its simple – people tend to water plants in the same direction, and every time you move in a circurlar route holding the hosepipe one twist is added.

We've just done a third harvest of our Ovi's Romanian Giant tomatoes. We will probably get one more harvest done in September, but that will be it for the season. We are harvesting them for their seed, as our current seed stocks are very low. It is a really nice tomato, and I hate to wast them, so once we extract the seed I use the left over flesh and make some wonderful tomato soup.
