Highland Carbon announces the sale of our Sutherland Coastal Forest project located in the wild and woolly Northeast corner of Scotland. The project will deliver an impressive 82,533 tCO2e-PIU worth of carbon sequestration from the atmosphere as the 384,029 planted trees continue to grow.
This is one of the largest nature-based climate projects sold in the United Kingdom thus far this year. The scale of the project is immense. Spanning two sections, it is 60% larger than Hyde Park in London!!
The lower elevation runs around the coast and enhances a long ribbon of coastal forest. The upper elevation section is adjacent to mature forest. It wraps around the hills and a montane loch whilst benefiting the community drinking source.
This forest design project is comprised of a diverse range of tree species using locally collected seeds: Scots pine, Norway Spruce, silver birch, sycamore, wild cherry, downy birch, goat willow, rowan, alder, sessile oak, bird cherry, aspen, holly, hazel, elder, back thorn and eared willow. Aspen a rare tree specie being reintroduced to Scottish wilderness.
There are two important Site of Special Scientific Interest within view of the project. The new woodland provides excellent connectivity between existing woodlands and forms part of the primary/secondary native woodland habitat network. Very large areas of ground have been left open, which will maintain habitat for Black grouse and a range of wading birds.
Recently re-introduced red squirrels nearby benefit from the extended forest cover, as do species such as badgers, pine martens and potentially Scottish wildcats. There is an active Golden eagle nesting site on the Estate and two active osprey nests in adjacent woodland. Otters utilise the burns on the project at both low and high elevation.
The project achieves seven UN Sustainable Development Goals:
~ Clean Water & Sanitation
~ Good Health & Wellbeing
~ Quality Education
~ Climate Action
~ Life on Land
~ Life Below Water
~ Partnerships for the Goals
