Plants can be a very convenient in pots, especially if you're renting, softening hard landscaping, or creating a certain soil structure/pH for a specific plant.
When deciding to place a plant in a pot there are a few things to consider...
What type of soil does the plant like? And can you accommodate it within the pot?
How often will you need to water the plant? Plants in pots have less access to falling rain water on the surrounding ground and some foliage can block rain getting to the soil surface.
What will the pot be made from? Galvanised metal, terracotta, wood, plastic? They will all have impact the contained plant in different ways.
How will you ensure the plant receives enough nutrients to be strong and healthy? Annual mulching, liquid plant food, bought or homemade? Plants living in pots can use up resources very quickly, so having a plan is always a good idea!
