🌉 Works completed at Norton Footbridge

SGH Civils & Surfacing has completed refurbishment works at Norton Footbridge, replacing the existing decking and upgrading the handrails.

The existing timber deck had reached the end of its working life, with severe rot, making replacement essential.

The works included:

✅ Removal and disposal of approximately 61.7m² of existing decking.
✅ Installation of a new 45m × 1.37m GRP bridge deck, including additional timber supports.
✅ Replacement of the three-rail handrail.

Our team established a fenced work area and welfare facilities, using harnesses, safety lanyards and staging boards to support safe working throughout the installation.

A great effort from the SGH team, delivering a refreshed crossing with durable new GRP decking. 👏

🍂 Autumn is the perfect time to prepare your site for winter 🍂

As the weather begins to change, now is the ideal time to inspect and maintain your surfaces before colder temperatures arrive.

✅ Works complete at Brierholme Carr Bridge, Thorne

SGH Civils & Surfacing have completed the culvert infilling works on behalf of Doncaster Council.

Our team cleared waste and slipped material from the existing culvert before installing two 350mm twin-wall pipes side by side along its roof. Timber formwork and brickwork facing were installed at both ends, with 56m³ of concrete void filler placed through two access openings formed in the carriageway.

Following completion, the road openings were reinstated. Two-way traffic lights managed vehicle movements during the works, and a dedicated concrete washout area supported site environmental controls.

The team also had to respond to the disruption caused by a separate burst water main further down the road, unrelated to SGH’s works, adapting site operations to deal with the additional challenge.

🚧 Project Update: Gleeson Homes, Hemswell Cliff

The SGH Surfacing team has been busy delivering another phase of surfacing works at Gleeson Homes in Hemswell Cliff.

Our works included:
✅ 327m² of SMA surface course to private and shared drives
✅ 118m² of AC6 surface course to footpaths
✅ 267.5m² of sacrificial binder to footpaths
✅ 1,044m² of AC20 binder laid in two layers, including bond coat
✅ Associated regulating works throughout

That’s more than 1,750m² completed across the development—another quality job delivered by the SGH team.

Project Update: Jacquet

Great progress is being made by the SGH team at Jacquet, where we are delivering specialist concrete works to provide a new plant platform, inside a live factory environment.

The full scope includes:

✅ Establishing the site compound
✅ Saw-cutting and excavating 117m² of existing concrete flooring
✅ Extending the low-level concrete slab by 40m²
✅ Constructing 41.2 linear metres of reinforced concrete retaining wall
✅ Stripping the formwork and completing the retaining-wall finish
✅ Installing a 500mm concrete strip to tie the new retaining wall into the existing floor slab

Working indoors within an operational factory presents its own challenges. Effective dust suppression, careful coordination and minimising disruption and downtime for the client remain key throughout the project.

Preparation works are now almost complete, and we are awaiting delivery of the bespoke formwork designed by our trusted colleagues at Mabey Hire before completing the final concrete pours.

Another technically challenging project progressing safely and efficiently thanks to great teamwork from everyone involved.

Pulled it out of the bag—with less than 48 hours’ notice!

The SGH Surfacing team mobilised at short notice to complete works on Stripe Road and North Common Road in Tickhill, on behalf of CDC.

Delivered across two weekend night shifts to minimise disruption, the works included:

✅ 1,826m² of carriageway planing
✅ 150m² of heavy-duty binder course
✅ 1,826m² of Steelphalt Steelpave Industrial SMA, incorporating MacRebur MR6 additive
✅ Tanker-applied bond coat throughout
✅ Clearance of overgrown vegetation to expose the existing channels
✅ Reinstatement of road markings and 28 metal cat’s eyes

A brilliant effort from everyone involved—from planning and mobilisation through to the teams delivering on site. This is what teamwork, flexibility and commitment look like.

What causes cracks in tarmac and asphalt? 🤔

Cracks don't usually appear overnight. They're often the result of wear and tear over time, and catching them early can help prevent more costly repairs later on.

Some of the most common causes include:

🚧 Heavy traffic – Repeated use by cars, vans, and HGVs puts constant pressure on the surface, eventually leading to cracks.

💧 Water ingress – Water can seep into small cracks and weaken the layers beneath. During colder weather, freezing and thawing can make the damage worse.

🌡️ Changing temperatures – Hot summers and freezing winters cause surfaces to expand and contract, which can lead to cracking over time.

🏗️ Poor foundations – If the ground beneath the surface isn't properly prepared or begins to move, cracks can develop as the surface loses support.

🌱 Tree roots and ground movement – Natural ground movement or growing tree roots can place pressure on the surface, causing it to crack.

Small cracks may not seem like a major issue, but if they're left untreated, they can quickly develop into potholes or more extensive damage.

Project Complete – Pighill Allotments

Following a busy 12-week programme, SGH is pleased to confirm that our works at Pighill Allotments are now complete.

Key elements delivered by our team included:
✅ Site clearance and preparation
✅ Earthworks and groundworks
✅ Drainage and underground services
✅ Foundations and bases for the new modular buildings
✅ External works, access areas and final reinstatement

The new modular buildings were successfully delivered to site yesterday, marking an important final milestone for the project.

A big thank you to everyone involved for their hard work throughout the scheme, and to the allotment holders and local community for their patience and cooperation while the improvements were carried out.

🏗️ Project Update – Wiseton Pumping Station
SGH Civils is making good progress with alteration and enabling works at Wiseton Pumping Station on behalf of the IDB.

The existing 8m × 4m timber building has now been safely dismantled and removed. Our team is currently breaking out the existing brickwork in preparation for installing the new structural steel lintels and creating the widened 2.6m opening.

The remaining works include core drilling two 150mm-diameter cable openings through the existing 360mm brick wall, installing the new steelwork and padstones, removing the internal timber kiosk, and making good the exposed brickwork with cement render.

All activities are being carefully coordinated within the pumping-station environment, with safety and the protection of the existing structure remaining our priorities.

We look forward to sharing further progress as the project develops.
