Second Fix last week. First Fix had already been done, and the previous spark had only left me a single armoured cable to run everything from — sockets and lights all needing to come off that one feed.

Bit of planning to make it all work safely.
Sockets taken from the main line, lighting fused down
properly, and also future‑proofed the setup for a sauna installation so the customer’s ready for the next stage without tearing anything back out.

Biggest problem was how do I terminate the steel wire armour ensuring the armour is still earthed without having the cable on show.

Awkward setup to inherit, but it finished up clean.

EICR carried out this week and a few faults found, rectified and made safe.

This job included replacing old downlights with new fire-rated fittings, tidying single insulation issues, installing a new cooker circuit, installing earth bonding, and correcting a really poor EV charger install.

While installing the cooker, we also found a ring main cable that had been chewed by mice — something that hadn’t shown up during testing, but luckily was spotted and repaired before it became a bigger issue.

We also added a new socket to separate the washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave, which had all been running from the same socket- potential fire hazard.

Another reminder that proper inspection, testing and good workmanship really do matter.

I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, but I’ve actually been busy with a wee project at home.

We bought a flat pack sauna, built it, painted it, installed it, and now we’re finally getting to enjoy it. 🔥

There’s something very satisfying about doing a job for yourself for once — especially when you get to sit back afterwards and reap the benefits.

Definitely worth the effort.

Good to see this issue get more air time. But it’s not a ‘dodgy installer’ issue - the fact is that heat pumps produce water at roughly half the temperature of a gas boiler - if you run conventional radiators at that temperature then the result should be obvious, less heat, a colder home. When heat pump temperatures are cranked up to compensate, their efficiency goes out the window. Even in a best case, modern, well insulated home you need to achieve a COP (Coefficient Of Performance) of 4 in order for your heating bill to match the one you had with a gas boiler - because you need to replace 12k units of gas with 3k units of electricity (typical homes) - 3 in for 12 out is a COP of 4, while the average performance of all heat pumps in Britain is a COP of 2.8. Time for some honesty in this debate, heat pumps are otherwise being mis sold, not least by energy companies who are quite happy with overall bills going up - perhaps.

Fasting and plunging. Good start to the year.

GO PLAY!

First 48-hour fast of the year ✅

Something I do regularly — not as a challenge, but as a reset.
• Paired the fast with cold plunges to stay sharp and present
• Hunger came in waves, not constantly
• Day 2 clarity was good, but patience was thinner and temper shorter — worth noting
• Cold exposure kept me grounded when things felt edgy
• Sleep improved noticeably during the fast
• Blood sugar monitored throughout and stayed well controlled
• Broke the fast gently with chicken broth — stomach came back online fast
• Fermented foods are often recommended, but for me they worked better later, not immediately
• Not about extremes — about awareness, resilience, and listening to your body
Sometimes being a little uncomfortable is exactly the point.

GO PLAY — even when it’s cold, quiet, and there’s no food on the table.

Why I hate seeing LIM on an EICR over and over. In domestic scenarios it's just lazy IMO. 2 little kids in this house, vno RCD protection and quite a few earth's not connected in backboxes, note the one behind the storage heater..... Because it was awkward to access- I'm sure many would have left it.

The ring would have tested ok as the earth's were twisted together, but we should also be inspecting

I see so many houses with satisfactory EICR'S, the cert plastered with LIM and customer thinking all is good.
