We can chlorinate your pipe work... Where's your dosing equipment? Don't worry we'll just pour the chlorine in the pipe end.....šŸ˜±.

Bad idea and this video shows why this is a very bad idea.

In this video we utilise some non-toxic drain marker dye to simulate sodium hypochlorite poured into a pipe. The pipe is set in such as was as to simulate a service main going from the road side into a plant room.

You can see from our previous video on flow rates and filling from a hose pipe that there are many pitfalls but to just pour the chlorine into the pipe is crazy.

We have experienced this too many times from companies and in discussion with clients after they have failed to obtain their connection. So my question is, based on this video, how are they able to achieve the required 50 mg/L written on pretty much every one of these certificates. The answer is they aren't and just write the 50 mg/L as this is what they believe the standards require (we can discuss that point in more detail in another post). No auditable proof, no questions asked and as long as the micro results are clear (irrespective of if these samples were even taken from the pipe) then connection granted.

You hope that the microbiological samples will fail but based on how, and worryingly where from, samples are taken there is a chance that they will show clear microbiological results as the very narrow path of water has been super chlorinated by pouring in the neat chlorine. However, once connected and proper filling obtained any contamination on the sides or in the end of the pipe will quite happy contaminate anything downstream and potentially cause upstream contamination of the network.

Think of the health risks to everyone the water is feeding and think of the added stress, time and money to get your connection cleared if your chlorination company messes up. Choose your chlorination company wisely and prevent issues like this!!

Bunding chemicals is vital!!!

When a commissioning company turns up you would expect health and safety to be paramount, when all said and done they are working on drinking water systems and as such hygiene and good practice should be at the forefront of everything they do, surely?

Why then, do we routinely see chlorination/commissioning companies boasting about this job or that job with chemical drums just dropped on the ground?

All it takes is a careless passer-by to knock over 25L of 14% industrial grade, aquatic polluting, sodium hypochlorite and the whole site has a bad case of the Environment Agency with symptoms including, downtime, fines, prosecutions, bad reputation and exclusion from future tenders.

Bunding chemical isn't hard, in fact it's a legal requirement so let's make sure it happens.

If you have been following for any length of time you will have seen our highly prized black boxes.

What you might not be aware of is the blue flashing lights on our power packs! How better to show they are working, warn people something is going on and just look sooo cool...

One of our engineers was working late (we always stay to get the job done) and you can see the flashing lights in all their glory. Note also the bunded chemical, fully proportional to flow dosing box and the lovely shiny stainless steel fittings.

Oh to be a water mains commissioning engineer!

And no we don't put them on our van dashboards at night to speed our way home!

Spot the leak!

A good pressure test should stress the pipe work and expose any leak, even the small ones.

This is why procedural accuracy, GPS logging and correct data recording is essential as without it you could end up having mains passed that shouldn't be.

Whilst a leak is never welcome it is always better to find it at the commissioning stage than 2 months down the line when there are houses drawing from the main and everything is reinstated.

The costs at this stage are significantly higher than at build stage and there is only one sure thing about ANY leak, they only get WORSE!!!!

Our clients have confidence in our ability to find leaks at the commissioning stage but we also go that extra mile and ensure that we work with them to get the leak fixed and the commissioning back on track.

Bolt torques on flanges......

Probably the biggest source of failure for pressure tests. Luckily this one was exposed and our engineers could resolve it and get another test on and get a pass for our client.

Ensure bolts are properly tightened and in the correct order, or you risk gasket blow out, and your failure rate for new pressure tests will fall dramatically.

Where we find these we will always try to fix them for our client but buried flanges on valves etc are not easily located.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness the saying goes.....

Whatever your religious beliefs, or not, there is no denying that cleanliness when installing or commissioning new water mains is vital. Anyone with an EUSR card is taught the importance of chlorine spray and having a ground sheet for tools and equipment to ensure contaminants such as mud and other organic material cannot enter the pipe work.

Plastic groundsheets however are however not the greatest environmental choice and as a commissioning company our requirements for large areas of protection are minimal.

As such we use a reusable dimpled protection mat that is not only robust, washable and re-usable but also has dimples to allow any water or debris to run off below the level of the equipment/tools.

Small enough to fit in a pocket our engineers always have them at hand to ensure their tools and the odd removed hydrant/gasket etc. remain out of the mud and clean.

A small thing but it can be the difference between a pass and a fail, especially on a Taste & Odour sample and shows our commitment to quality at even the most basic level.

We also pressure test Pumping Mains (sewerage, rainwater etc.)!

We have a range of specific fittings to accommodate both internal and external pipe access, flanges etc and can test from small 63mm mains to long lengths of large diameter mains to suit. That said it is always easier to perform these tests when we have easy access to the 2 pipes such as in this case. Once pipes are benched in it is much harder and can require benching to be broken out so get us in early and avoid any heartache.

All tests come with full data analysis, certification and data download to give confidence that your main is free from potentially environmentally damaging leaks.

Even where there is no water on site we can provide solutions or advice such as in this case where we utilised IBCs to provide a reservoir of water for swabbing and filling the mains. This significantly reduced cost for the client and we still provided a perfect 10 bar test proving no leaks.

How to make the job of the Commissioning Engineer more challenging. Hide the hydrant!!!

Amazing that groundworkers think that backfilling everything and hiding hydrants is appropriate. Not only does this mean the hydrant bowls are heavily contaminated and require significant cleaning prior to use but it also means we can't crack on when we arrive on site as we have to find the hydrants.

If the hydrant valve has been left open dirt will also enter the pipe resulting in increased swabbing requirement to remove the material that has ingressed. There is also clearly a risk of damage to the hydrant which can result in costly repairs.

As an SLP this costs you money so make sure you make groundworkers aware of the implications of doing this and chamber them and protect hydrants as soon as possible.

In fact, exactly 10 bar; not some near enough on a gauge needle depending on which direction you look at it from.

Exactly 10 bar to 2 decimal places using a routinely calibration checked digital pressure datalogger.

Expect the best from your commissioning company and don't settle for old, outdated methodologies and old inaccurate equipment.
