Nice little rig setup...

Things to check:

Tight hoses with no leaks
Proper containers for pressure test reservoir
Plant nappy under petrol equipment and far away from main
Flow meters used
Correct standpipes with correct double check valve
Proper proportional dosing equipment

If you aren't seeing these from your commissioning company then ask why not! This should all be standard issue, you need your commissioning company to reflect the high quality work YOU do and as they are one of the last people to turn up on site these are the people that are remembered. Don't let them tarnish your reputation with your client!

Cleanliness is next to Godliness the saying goes.....

Whatever your religious beliefs, or not, there is no denying that cleanliness when installing or commissioning new water mains is vital. Anyone with an EUSR card is taught the importance of chlorine spray and having a ground sheet for tools and equipment to ensure contaminants such as mud and other organic material cannot enter the pipe work.

Plastic groundsheets however are however not the greatest environmental choice and as a commissioning company our requirements for large areas of protection are minimal.

As such we use a reusable dimpled protection mat that is not only robust, washable and re-usable but also has dimples to allow any water or debris to run off below the level of the equipment/tools.

Small enough to fit in a pocket our engineers always have them at hand to ensure their tools and the odd removed hydrant/gasket etc. remain out of the mud and clean.

A small thing but it can be the difference between a pass and a fail, especially on a Taste & Odour sample and shows our commitment to quality at even the most basic level.

Flushing your new main with plenty of water will make sure it's clean surely?

Flush loads through and all the debris will get pushed out of the main is the common thought process but in reality this is very much NOT the case.

This video demonstrates just how little material flushing alone removes from a new main and why it is important to have a robust procedure in place to ensure that your commissioning company/operatives perform these.

Failure to do so can result in significant debris, contamination and air still being present resulting in a failed connection.

Make sure you r commissioning company has the expertise, competence and training to carry out works correctly. As an SLP your reputation lives or dies by your commissioning company.

Pipe Swab Photos, are they provided?

If not why not. We all carry around a phone with generally a high resolution camera so there is no excuse for not providing swab photographs to the client. We photograph every swab after each run.

You might ask why this is important? Well for many reasons.

1. Proof of swabbing. Anyone can fill out a sheet with a tick box saying the pipe has been swabbed, it's much harder to fake a photograph.
2. Proof of pipe work cleanliness. You can prove the pipe work contains no significant contamination and the swab exited clean.
3. Proof of pipe work contamination. If the pipework wasn't clean then it's important he client knows this so hygienic laying standards can be improved through training.
4. Proof you got the swabs out so nobody can accuse you of leaving a swab in (yes we have had this accusation).
5. Confidence for the Water Authority. Any Water Authority worth their salt should be asking for proof of swabbing. In todays digital world that should include photographs so without them you risk having the connection refused.
6. Auditability. As a client, manager or director you need to be sure the contractors you employ are working to the correct standards. Photographs of swabs (especially with GPS locations) gives greater confidence in the quality of works performed and reduces on site audit requirements.

WHS provide a full swabbing record with GPS locations of swab locations and also photographic evidence of all swabs used.

You can see the benefits/requirements of swab photographs so if you aren't getting them as part of your commissioning pack then ask why not.

Alternatively give us a call and we can ensure that going forwards you have a full detailed photographic record of each and every stage of your new mains commissioning.

No power, no problem.....

Fully proportional chlorine dosing to 50 mg/L at flow rates of >200 L/min in the middle of a field.

No noise, no pollution and no risk.

This is bespoke kit built by ourselves to ensure the work is performed to the highest standards in the shortest amount of time with minimal risk. Nothing like it exists in the marketplace. Why is that you might ask?

Only by being the best at what you do and fully understanding the processes, risks and technical aspects can you prepare the best solutions, and we believe there is nobody better at commissioning new mains than us. Don't take our word for it though ask our clients, look at our kit and speak to our engineers. We have a top down approach where the people at the very top fully understand the processes, challenges and risks and have the technical ability to provide training and solutions to the staff lower down as well as the investment to make it happen. Without this how can the people performing the work do the best job?

If you have any mains commissioning requirements give us a call. You'll be amazed at our processes and paperwork also pleasantly surprised at our pricing as our equipment also makes for an efficient job, reducing costs.

The importance of proper sample taps....

No matter how good your commissioning is it can all fall down at the final hurdle of sampling. Poor sampling technique can mean the difference between connection or not and can result in days or even weeks of delays with the associated costs, which can sometimes be phenomenal.

This is especially important on wet sites where there are risks of frost stats lying in water as unless under pressure these will not seat and you risk sucking dirty water (look up venturi effect) into the sample steam. We fell foul of this many years ago due to bad sampling techniques by a Water Undertakers Sampling Technician. It cost us 2 repeat bad sample results and huge issues for our client.

Using a proper sample tap allows the hydrant and sample point to be correctly disinfected and seats the frost stat, thus providing an accurate sample.

Don't cut corners, or allow your commissioning company to do so, use the correct equipment for the job.

Beware!!!

Chlorine, whilst a widely used biocide, is highly toxic to aquatic life. It damages fish gills readily and will pollute the aquatic environment quickly and catastrophically.

Prosecution and heavy fines will be meted out by the environment agency for any contamination event and sites as a whole will be implicated.

All highly chlorinated water should be treated proportionally with sodium thiosulphate as it discharges to ensure that chlorine is removed and the water is safe for discharge.

If you have chlorination works occurring on water mains pipe work please ensure that any contractors appreciate the importance and undertake the appropriate de-chlorination processes to ensure no pollution occurs as otherwise you might well find yourselves in deep water!!!

Perfect swab retrieval....

We video the majority of our swabs out of the pipe. Why take this extra time and effort when you can just photograph them you ask; although many companies don't even do that. The technology exists in pretty much everyone's pocket so ask not why we do it, ask instead why others don't!!

Photographs are great and we do include them on our comprehensive certification/job reports but how do you know it's the photograph of the actual swab used? How do you know it was the swab from that area and in the event of a problem how do you persuade the connecting Water Authority that there were no issues?

Also how do you prove when a swab gets stuck later in a project that you have retrieved all yours?

Simple, video the swabs coming out of the pipe.

In this video you see the perfectly clean swab in perfectly clear water being actually pulled out of the pipe work. You will also see the labelling on the swab to ensure we know we have got out the one we loaded and that we have not got unknown (preloaded) swabs in the system which may have come out first and resulted in swabs being left in the pipe work. Then we do a swing round of the area as video proof of the location, this is almost impossible to recreate without being there.

Yes it takes, longer, yes it is more involved but it give us, our clients and the Water Authorities the evidence needed if there was a problem with samples or other issues in the future.

This is just one of the many reasons why we are the best at what we do!

18/05/2026

Whilst we are predominantly known for our New Mains Commissioning in summer we also perform commissioning of many large temporary events systems.

Here is a rather lovely shot of one of our engineers working on one such system with a slo mo. Luckily our engineers work much faster than this and get the events pipe work commissioned and providing safe potable water ready for the thousands of attendees.

We still attain the same high standards of swabbing, flushing and chlorination with the same kit we utilise for our mains commissioning, ensuring fully proportional and therefore homogenous chlorine throughout the pipe length.
