Electric Daisies ⚡️🌼

One of my favourite plants to give unsuspecting visitors to the kitchen garden.

Electric daisy (Acmella oleracea), also known as the toothache plant or buzz button, looks fairly innocuous. But nibble one of the flower heads and within seconds your mouth starts tingling, fizzing and eventually going slightly numb. It’s a very strange sensation and quite difficult to describe until you’ve tried one.

Chefs also use the flowers for their unusual sensory effect, particularly in cocktails and desserts.

It really was a pleasure to welcome such a brilliant group of writers, chefs, makers and creatives into the garden to show them everything ANRÁN has to offer.

Honestly wish the day lasted longer!

Now, back to weeding! 💚🌿

What a day.

The only photo I managed to take, which probably says something about how wonderfully busy the day was.

To see produce I’ve grown here at ANRÁN gathered from the garden, prepared so beautifully and then shared around a table with such a brilliant group of people was incredibly special.

There were familiar faces, lots of new ones, chefs, growers, writers, makers and people doing really interesting things with food and hospitality. Seeing conversations start, connections being made and people genuinely enjoying the garden and what we grow here was everything I’d hoped the day might be.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came and brought such warmth, curiosity and enthusiasm with them.

And to the brilliant people who helped bring the day together. Jason for taking what came out of the garden and turning it into such a beautiful lunch, Louie Bespoke_Bar_Bros for the Botanical Bar, Nelly Nelly Konradi for the wonderful sweet things, Andy Hill for awesome PR support and the whole ANRÁN Michael Edwin team who worked so hard behind the scenes. It really was a team effort.

Feeling very lucky to do what I do. And very proud of this kitchen garden. 🌿

Someone called me the Brassica Queen yesterday.

I do love a brassica. Always have.

Quietly confident, earthy, a little unassuming and only the star of the show once you get to know it. Feels like my spirit vegetable!

I’ll take it 👑

So very happy with the melons this year 🍈🍈

The variety is Charentais, a small French cantaloupe traditionally associated with the Charentes region. They have smooth, pale grey-green skin and beautifully fragrant orange flesh with sweet, juicy and an intense melon flavour. Seeds from the highly recommended Chiltern Seeds

Melons are not the easiest thing to grow in the UK, needing plenty of warmth and a long enough season to ripen properly, but this variety has done brilliantly.

These have been growing undercover in the polytunnel and, with all the heat we’ve had this summer, they’ve absolutely loved it. Delicious.

Only dilemma is there aren’t many, so who do I share them with? 🍈🍈

Basil 🌿

I’ve grown 12 different varieties this year, which felt slightly excessive when I was sowing them, but I’ve absolutely loved having every one.

The range of colours, leaf shapes, scents and flavours has been brilliant. Every pesto I’ve made has been slightly different, and even something as simple as a pizza can take a completely different direction depending on which basil you pick.

I sowed plenty of extras too, so we’ve had basil plants for sale in our honesty shop throughout the summer, with all proceeds going to Veterans With Dogs and Cancer Research UK.

This year’s twelve:

1. Bascuro
2. Cinnamon
3. Emerald Tower
4. Genovese
5. Lettuce
6. Red
7. Lemon
8. Lime
9. Purple Ball
10. Queen of Sheba
11. Thai
12. Thai Tower

Twelve felt excessive in spring. It doesn’t now. And I don’t want summer to end! 🌿

Thanks Heartlands and Wild Edges | Guided Backpacking Trips for Women for helping me with the flat lay 💚

Glass Gem Corn 🧡🤎💜💙

It’s a strange harvest, because I look forward to it so much. When you peel back the husks and don’t know what will be revealed it’s thrilling. But they aren’t good for eating, so it’s rather bitter sweet. They make great popping corn, but once the kernal pops it just looks like any old popcorn and you lose the magic. These are best for being gazed upon as decoration only!

Ps: im hosting a luxury retreat at ANRAN this October, centred around the kitchen garden, great food and slowing down. You can find out more Luxury Devon Retreats hosted by Jenny & Camille

It’s a big boy! 🫜

I love beetroot. Red ones, pink ones, yellow ones, white ones… in my case Boltardy, Chioggia, Golden and Albina Ice.

This one is an absolute whopper. I’m not entirely sure I should have let it get this big. It might be a little tougher than its smaller friends, but we’ll soon find out.

I’ve got a bring-and-share girls’ evening tomorrow, so I think this has just decided what dish I’m taking. I’ll roast it and see where we go from there 😬

A whole weekend away from the kitchen garden! And what a very good weekend it was.

Lunch at the incredible ROAM , followed by a wander around the beautiful English vineyard Sandridge Barton Wines - Devon Vineyard which, in the sunshine, honestly made us feel like we’d flown to Italy. We stayed on for their ‘Vineyard Vibes’, which definitely made me feel my age, but for a brief moment I also felt quite cool.

Today we popped into Outside near Kingsbridge and the cool vibes continued. What a place. Skate park and great coffee alongside the most impressive, abundant kitchen garden. I absolutely love wandering around someone else’s growing space and having a good nosey. Hats off to them! Agretti alongside aubergines, peppers to die for and a composting set-up to swoon over. My kind of place.

We finished the weekend with a stunning coastal walk from Bolberry down to Hope Cove. Sea air, sunshine with my best friend alongside me.

It’s good to be alive. 💚💚💚💚
