A bit late in the season as it is cooling off now but today I applied 50 million nematodes to my garden to tackle vine weevil which can devastate a range of plants they like to eat such as Primula, Heuchera and Fuchsia. Adults are active in the summer months and eat small notches in leaves. I carry out what I call Notch Watch to keep an eye on levels of adults. Grubs are active many times of the year and late summer/autumn along with spring are good periods for application.
The pack is dissolved into 10 ltrs of water (I favour rain water) and then 500ml is added to 4.5 ltrs of water and applied to the soil or compost around the plants. I favour the form produced by BASF Nemasys and Nemaslug Pest Control

So today's first task of the day at my Littleover customers garden was to "prune the raspberries down". So after a quick tutorial on raspberries and a question and answer session asking when they usually fruit etc I concluded the canes were staying as they were as they were summer fruiting raspberries which fruit on this years canes next year. Just a good w**d and old dead material pruned out leaving it nice and tidy.

EDIT - Cyclamen now sold out! Got a few bits to sell currently i have 10 mini Cyclamen £2 each and 18 two tone heathers ...

Fuchsia Gall Mite is spreading across the UK. Here in Derby I have seen it for the last two years in customers gardens. It leads to a mass of distortion around the growing point. This leads to distorted growth and restricts flowering. It can spread on the wind and appears to be spreading a lot due to milder winters.
Remove any distorted growth and dispose of in your residual waste bin. Do not home compost or send for composting by the council which can aid it's spread.

Back at my Sinfin customers today who have the mini meadow in the middle of their lawn. Now we are into Autumn todays task was to cut more areas of it down and remove the material. It was decided for now to make pathways through the area which created islands in the lawn, as opposed to Islands in the Stream as Dolly and Kenny used to sing about!
This leaves areas for wildlife to maintain a home instead of being made instantly homeless giving them time to move on before further mowing in a months time. It also cleared areas to sow seed of future wild flowers along with the planting of Field Scabious and Autumn Hawkbit.

Look at this Hop in my Uncles garden. It grew from a seed some years ago and my horticultural eye spotted it when I was w**ding. This is Humulus lupulus and it likely seeded from a neighbour’s golden version.
