Finally, the rain we needed! 🌧️🌱🙌

After all that dry weather, our allotments are finally getting a proper drink! I’m sure the plants (and all of us who’ve been watering constantly 😂) are very grateful.

Nothing beats a good bit of rain on the plots – hopefully we’ll see everything looking greener and happier over the next few days. 🥕🥬🌻

🌱 WHAT CAN WE PLANT AT THE ALLOTMENT NOW? 🌱

We’re coming towards the end of summer, but there’s still plenty we can sow and plant! 🥕🥬

Late August is a great time for:

🥬 Spinach
🌱 Pak choi
🥗 Winter lettuce
🌿 Rocket
🌿 Coriander
🥬 Mustard leaves
🥬 Mizuna
🌱 Radishes
🌱 Spring onions
🥬 Spring cabbage
🥦 Purple sprouting broccoli – young plants
🥬 Kale – young plants
🌱 Turnips
🌿 Green manure for empty beds

🧄 Coming up in September & October:
Start thinking about planting garlic, autumn onion sets and overwintering broad beans ready for next year.

🍂 As we head towards autumn, remember that plots still need regular attention. Keep on top of weeds, clear away finished crops and make good use of empty beds where you can.

For many people, an allotment is about much more than growing fruit and vegetables. It can be a place to find purpose, enjoy the fresh air, connect with nature and build friendships with people who share the same interests.

🍂 AUTUMN IS ON ITS WAY – ALLOTMENT REMINDER 🍂

As we head towards autumn, now is a great time to start preparing our allotments for the change of season. 🌱🍁

There’s still plenty to be getting on with:

🍅 Keep harvesting your remaining summer crops
🌱 Clear away plants that have finished producing
🌿 Keep on top of weeds – they don’t stop growing just because summer is ending!
🥕 Sow and plant suitable autumn and winter crops
🍂 Add healthy plant material to your compost heap
🌱 Mulch empty beds or sow green manure to protect the soil
🧹 Tidy paths, edges and around sheds and greenhouses
🪵 Secure sheds, greenhouses and other structures ready for autumn winds
💧 Empty, clean and store away anything that won’t be needed over winter
🌻 Collect seeds from suitable plants ready for next year
🗑️ Remove rubbish and unwanted materials from your plot

⚠️ A reminder to all plot holders

Your allotment should remain tidy, maintained and cultivated throughout the year – not just during spring and summer.

As crops finish, please don’t simply leave beds to become overgrown. Continue visiting your plot regularly, keeping weeds under control, maintaining paths and boundaries and preparing growing areas for the months ahead.

A little work throughout autumn and winter makes a huge difference when spring comes around. 🌱

Take care on your plots, keep well hydrated
and take regular shaded breaks

🟠AMBER HEAT HEALTH WARNING🟠

The UK Health Security Agency has issued another Amber Heat Health Alert for the East Midlands. This alert will be in place from 9am Tuesday 11 August to 9pm on Friday 14 August.

🚰 Drink plenty of water and take a bottle of water with you if you're out and about
🚫 Avoid the sun between 11am-3pm
🧴 Wear sunblock if you’re heading out
🚌 Check for service disruptions before you travel
🌊 Stay away from open water, no matter how inviting it may look

🔥 In addition to staying safe around open water, it is also important to reduce the risk of fire. Please refrain from lighting garden fires and barbeques.
