We're pleased to share another successful lift modernisation project completed at Southmoor Apartments in Manchester.

As part of the wider regeneration of this former high-rise residential building, we upgraded the existing lift system to improve reliability, safety, performance and passenger experience.

Key upgrades included:
✅ New control system and drive equipment
✅ Modern door operator and landing controls
✅ Enhanced safety systems
✅ LED lighting and emergency backup systems
✅ Complete electrical upgrades

The result:
• Improved reliability and reduced downtime
• Enhanced resident experience
• Increased energy efficiency
• Extended lift lifespan and future serviceability

A great example of how lift modernisation can deliver the benefits of a new lift installation without the cost and disruption of a full replacement.

We use lifts every day, yet common myths still surround them. Let’s bust the biggest misconceptions!

Myth: You will run out of air if you get stuck.

Reality: Elevators are not airtight. They are designed with ventilation systems—often required to be at least 2% of the floor space—ensuring a constant supply of oxygen even during a power cut.

We use lifts every day, yet common myths still surround them. Let’s bust the biggest misconceptions!

Myth: An overcrowded elevator will plummet.

Reality: Modern lifts have overload sensors. If the weight limit is exceeded, the lift simply will not move, and the doors will stay open—often accompanied by a buzzer—until someone gets off.

We use lifts every day, yet common myths still surround them. Let’s bust the biggest misconceptions!

Myth: The doors can open into an empty shaft.

Reality: The car itself controls the landing doors. Unless the elevator car is level with the floor, the mechanism to unlock and open the outer doors will not engage.

We use lifts every day, yet common myths still surround them. Let’s bust the biggest misconceptions!

Myth: The elevator will free-fall if the cable snaps.

Reality: Elevators are held by multiple steel cables (usually 4 to 8), each strong enough to hold the full weight of the car on its own. If they were to somehow fail, a mechanical "overspeed governor" triggers emergency brakes that lock the car to the guide rails.

TJ's LIFT KNOWLEDGE - Q- What happens if there's a power failure when I'm in the lift?

One of the most common concerns people have about lifts is what happens if the power fails while the lift is in use. Modern lift systems are designed with multiple safety features to protect passengers and prevent dangerous situations during a power outage.

In most modern lifts, many are fitted with a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), an electrical device that provides near-instantaneous emergency power to connected equipment when the main power source fails. This system allows the lift to slowly travel to the nearest floor level using stored backup power. Once the lift reaches the floor, the doors will normally open automatically, allowing passengers to exit safely.

For hydraulic lifts, the system often uses controlled hydraulic release valves to gently lower the car to the nearest floor under gravity. Traction lifts typically use backup battery systems to temporarily power the controls and door operation during the rescue process.

Even in situations where a lift does stop between floors, passengers are never in danger of the lift falling. Modern lifts are fitted with multiple braking systems, overspeed governors and safety gear designed to securely hold the lift in place.

Lift alarm systems and emergency communication devices also allow trapped passengers to contact assistance quickly if required. Regular servicing and maintenance ensure all emergency rescue systems continue to operate correctly and comply with current UK lift safety standards.

The UK’s ageing population is reshaping how people think about their homes. More homeowners are choosing to stay in the place they love rather than face the disruption of moving or downsizing.

Instead of relocating to a bungalow, many are investing in home lifts—creating safe, accessible living across all floors while maintaining independence and comfort.

A home lift isn’t just about mobility; it’s about future-proofing your property, preserving lifestyle, and adding long-term value. With modern designs that are compact, stylish, and energy-efficient, installing a lift has become a practical and desirable solution.

Staying put has never been easier—or smarter.
