Emergency lighting is a critical life safety system, not simply a compliance exercise. In commercial premises, educational facilities, care homes, and industrial environments, it plays a vital role in ensuring safe evacuation during power failure or emergency situations. Compliance with BS 5266 is therefore both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility for duty holders.

BS 5266 sets out the code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises, detailing the requirements for design, installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance. The standard ensures that escape routes are clearly illuminated, high-risk areas remain visible, and occupants can safely exit a building without panic or confusion. This is particularly important in environments such as care homes and schools, where vulnerable persons may require additional time and support to evacuate.

From a compliance perspective, emergency lighting systems must be regularly inspected and tested. Monthly functional tests are required to confirm that fittings operate correctly when simulated mains failure occurs. In addition, a full duration test, typically annually, must be carried out to ensure the system can maintain illumination for the required period, usually three hours. All testing must be recorded in a logbook, which should be available for inspection by enforcing authorities or fire risk assessors.

Responsibility for compliance lies with the Responsible Person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Failure to maintain emergency lighting systems in accordance with BS 5266 can result in enforcement action, increased risk to life, and potential prosecution.
