This may seem a bit innocuous, but this is a burner door seal. When they fade to this grey colour they're getting to the point of failure. Part of a service is to check and replace things like this. Failure to do so could result in significant, possibly catastrophic, damage. (See pictures in comments of one that had failed recently)
Check your small print if you have a service contract with some larger nationals as they are often a safety check rather than a service (if the engineer is only there 15-20 minutes thats a good indicator) so this sort of thing wouldnt be picked up.
Get it done properly. Use local.

This boiler will likely last way beyond its 10 year manufacturers warranty. Probably nearer to double that. It pays to look after them.

Do you have an aging boiler?
Do you know in some cases that it could be using an extra 30% or more gas than is necessary to heat your home? (+£300 per year)
Add in a breakdown plan that may even condemn your boiler due to obsolete parts when it fails.
(+£450 per year)

Sure, they'll pay a sum towards your replacement (usually about £700 as a voucher) but it's already cost you that anyway in the plan and the extra gas. And it will next year too. And the year after. Then you're without heat while you get quotes and await the installation.

⛔ DON'T WAIT FOR THAT!! Get yourself a modern, efficient boiler with 7-13 years manufacturers warranty. Save on gas, ditch the breakdown plan. Less outgoings every month. Sounds like a better plan doesn't it 😀
