Catherine Sinclair

Just along the road from our contract on Ainslie Place, near the west end of Queen Street, stands this monument to a female writer and philanthropist, Catherine Sinclair, born on this day in 1800.
The statue is one of only a handful of public sculptures commemorating the achievements of women in the city.
Catherine was a successful novelist and children’s writer. She is credited with aiding the development of children’s writing. She was also a prominent philanthropist of the time, she established soup kitchens, she funded drinking fountains and established public seating, benches, along some of Edinburgh’s busy streets, and much more besides.
She died aged 64 and she is buried in the churchyard of St John’s Episcopal Church at the West End of Princes Street.

A lovely little exposition of the house we built for on , just on the edge of Edinburgh’s world famous NewTown. This is the second new house have built in this almost hallowed section of the city, but 2b Hart Street is probably our Magnum Opus.
Both houses were designed by the inimitable . The other is on Edinburgh’s most photographed street, .

Many of you will have known or known of Oliver Chapman. We worked with Oliver on a range of projects, from his time in Richard Murphy’s practice to when he set out on his own and established OCA Studio. He even came and worked for Inscape for a short time.
Like everyone who knew him we were devastated to hear of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent death. He was a very lovely man and a pleasure to have known.
This week we received a copy of his book ‘Oliver Chapman A Life In Architecture’ and we take enormous pride in being part of his story. We built some of his early works and constructed some of the furniture pieces he designed the last of all being a bookcase we built for his son to organise his academic works.
Richard Weston said that Oliver’s buildings enrich the lives of those who have the pleasure of using them. We have seen that at first hand and, indeed, have experienced it for ourselves.
It was an honour to have had you as a friend Oliver.

A magical little exhibition which closes tomorrow, the 8th March. It brings together the work of a number of architectural practices all of whose principals began their working career’s in the offices of Richard Murphy Architects.
Inscape had the great privilege of working with many of them and our work is prominent amongst the exhibits.
If you can manage a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

We said hello to a very old friend this week, and I must admit she’s looking a lot better these days than I am!
30 years ago we built this amazing award winning extension and it looks as good today as the day it was handed over.
I added a few notes to some of the photos which are just little memories from the build.
