People ask me when I'm getting a hand to do roofs.

The truth is, unless you know the feeling of satisfaction after completing a bigger job on your own.
Then you will never understand it.
Still get the same sense of accomplishment now as I did 17 years ago when I did my first roof myself.

Massive thank you to everyone on the village who stopped and complimented the work.

No rest, 2 reroofs already started while waiting for the weather to improve to get the cement work done on this one

After one of the toughest weeks in a long time mentally, I've got 3 reroofs all happening at once.

Mentally drained, physically beaten,

But 90 minute drive to drop off camping gear for my daughter who decided to stay with beavers at 8pm

A sleepover in the Livingroom with my boy. With the bearded dragon, leopard gecko and python to keep us company πŸ˜…

My kids are my fuel to do better, push myself to keep going.

Here's to the end of the working week and family time tomorrow.🫢🏻

Today the kids had an open afternoon at school. To see there classroom and what they have been working on.

Early start told the kids I might not make it, I've got a roof to strip and felt, the look on their faces said it all.

I said I'll be all dirty from work to come last minute.

Both together said " we don't care how dirty you turn up. We just want you there"

Lunch skipped and made it. Business is a balancing act. But one thing I'll never do is let my kids down. They know I work my arse off to give them everything I never had. But this morning was the push I needed 50sqm stripped, cleaned, renailed sarking and felted up, few hundred slates even carried down.

Remember behind every small business is just a partner/parent trying their best to juggle multiple projects and forgetting who they are as a person most of the time

Does anyone else hate the phrase " one man band"

I've always hated this phrase. Feels like inferior. Limiting.

9 hour shift solo, slates stripped and stacked, felt removed. Sarking renailed, and felted.
All loose materials bagged up and taken away.

Tomorrows goal, the rest stripped and felted and scaffolding cleared.

Social media is an amazing tool for everyone. To keep in contact with friend and family.

For businesses to reach customers.

I just seen a post for a local billboard page, asking for recommendations for roof cleaning. 40+ comments companies responding the same hour it was posted.
Only a couple actually local, support local, not 25/30 miles away, plenty good roofers in cupar to support.

Ok genuinely needing some feedback on both sides of the fence.

Free quotes?
Q. Customers would you be put off if you had a pay for a quote for work needing done on your property.
Q. Trades, do you charge for a quote, or what would you likely charge for a quote?

All trades are different, for roofers, we have to travel to the job. Put ladders up, move slates/tiles to find the issue to give a quote.
Sometimes having to put roof ladders up to access chimneys,.

So customers only see the time a tradesperson is there. But we have travel time, fuel, then going home to sit and work what materials we would use, how much those materials are and how long the job takes.
On big jobs this can take hours all for being used in comparison for the job.

I realise bigger companies have estimators on the books for this sole purpose. But it seems in my area anyway that more and more smaller businesses are running in construction rather than bigger companies who tackle all trades.

Something I say to any customer who asks, you must know a figure. Nope, unless is a small job I do with no materials then no, I sit down and work it all out. I have never had to go back to a customer and say sorry it's going to be a bit more than I quoted.
Infact I've had on a few occasions the job went too well I have finished and invoiced for less than the quote.

Hope everyone had a great Easter.

Highly recommend letting your kids hide eggs inside the house and let the parents find the eggs in the house after they find them in the garden.

Needless to say I lost πŸ˜…πŸ™ˆ.

Easter film and Sunday dinner. Ready to make the most of the dry weather this week 🀞🏻

I am that person who knows random facts about random things that people give you that double take at.

And I'm truly gutted to learn we have no understanding of why April the 1st is one for pulling pranks.

Traditional but no evidence of when and why it started.

Let's hear your pranks this year or previous years. I'm told when I get home there will be pranks played on me by the kids.

While working today I got some praise from the neighbour across the road.

She couldn't believe one person could re-roof a house themselves in a couple weeks.

After speaking to her, she was living in the house across from the job since 1952 and remembers the roof being redone when she was younger.

Always nice to get recognition for your hard work, especially from a generation that was known for a great working ethic.
