Ok genuinely needing some feedback on both sides of the fence.
Free quotes?
Q. Customers would you be put off if you had a pay for a quote for work needing done on your property.
Q. Trades, do you charge for a quote, or what would you likely charge for a quote?
All trades are different, for roofers, we have to travel to the job. Put ladders up, move slates/tiles to find the issue to give a quote.
Sometimes having to put roof ladders up to access chimneys,.
So customers only see the time a tradesperson is there. But we have travel time, fuel, then going home to sit and work what materials we would use, how much those materials are and how long the job takes.
On big jobs this can take hours all for being used in comparison for the job.
I realise bigger companies have estimators on the books for this sole purpose. But it seems in my area anyway that more and more smaller businesses are running in construction rather than bigger companies who tackle all trades.
Something I say to any customer who asks, you must know a figure. Nope, unless is a small job I do with no materials then no, I sit down and work it all out. I have never had to go back to a customer and say sorry it's going to be a bit more than I quoted.
Infact I've had on a few occasions the job went too well I have finished and invoiced for less than the quote.
