There is one week every summer when Britain collectively decides it needs air conditioning.

We pulled five years of UK search data to find it. The spike is not gradual. It arrives with the first properly hot day and it is close to vertical.

It is also the worst week of the year to buy. Everyone calls at once, prices are at their peak, and equipment lead times stretch from the usual 2 to 4 weeks out to 8 to 12. The people who end up waiting weeks in a heatwave are almost always the people who started looking during it.

The homes that get cooling quickly and sensibly are the ones that sorted it in the months when nobody was thinking about it.

People imagine a solar installation is mostly about the roof. On this one, the hardest part was getting the equipment up onto the scaffold at all, because the access was a little more than a shoulder's width.

The cable runs were set out at high level either side of the chimney stacks, with the EV charger, the battery storage and the panels all leaving on one run that splits off for the different roofs. It is the sort of decision that never shows up in the finished photos and makes the whole job tidier.

Gas plus electricity was heading towards £5,600 a year. It now runs at under £3,000, year on year, with six people living in the house. Those are the owner's figures rather than ours. The battery is the part people underestimate. It decides when the house buys electricity, not just how much.

Winter is the honest test of a heat pump. This is what changes when there is a battery behind it: the system charges when electricity is cheap and carries the house through the expensive hours. In our 2026 customer survey, customers with a battery alongside their heat pump were far more likely to report significantly lower bills than those with a heat pump alone. Reported as customers told us, not a guarantee of future savings.

Free hot water through the summer, and on some days the grid paying you to charge the car. It sounds like a stretch until you see how the heat pump, solar and battery are sequenced together on a smart tariff.
