🧱 What is a hopper running at 60% capacity costing your operation?

That was the problem facing a brick and block manufacturer in Dudley.

Their travel hopper was regularly operating at around 60% capacity because material was sticking to the steel, with scale and rust build-up affecting the flow. It was slowing the process, reducing capacity and making material changes more time-consuming because of the clean-down required.

Gregory’s lined the hopper to solve the problem and keep the material moving.

It’s now running at 100% capacity, materials can be changed much more easily and lengthy clean-downs between products are no longer required, helping prevent contamination between materials.

When you’re handling brick, block, aggregates and other abrasive materials, wear and build-up are part of the environment, but losing 40% of your hopper capacity doesn’t have to be.

Great to see another trailer leaving Weightlifter Bodies Ltd with a Quicksilver liner fitted by Gregory’s Linings.

This 68 cu yd aluminium plankside body has been built for Hardwick Haulage Ltd and features a 12mm HD Quicksilver liner, increasing to 15mm at the rear where additional protection is needed.

⏱️ How much production time are you losing because material isn’t flowing as it should?

When material starts sticking inside a storage bin, the problems soon add up. You’re spending more time cleaning it out, discharge becomes less predictable and years of build-up can eventually break away in clumps, potentially contaminating the product running through the bin at the time.

This aggregate tower storage bin is the first of five being completed by Gregory’s Linings, and once the existing build-up was removed, it was clear what had been happening underneath.

Layers of loose scale and corrosion had developed across the steelwork, retaining moisture from the product and contributing to the sticking problem.

After preparing the steelwork, our team installed TIVAR® 1000, giving the bin a low-friction lining that helps material move more freely instead of continually building up against the walls.

For any production or engineering manager looking at a job like this, downtime is always going to be part of the conversation. This entire installation was completed within a planned two-day shutdown, and similar work can be scheduled around weekends where possible to keep disruption to production to a minimum.

The difference can be seen in the before and after pictures, but the real value is what happens when the bin goes back into service: better material flow, less build-up, less cleaning and a more predictable production process.

That’s one of five bins completed, with the work carried out inside the customer’s existing shutdown window.
