☀️ Solar PV installation progressing in West End Lane, London ☀️

Work is underway on the first of two flat roofs as part of this multi-property solar PV project, using a Bauder flat-roof mounting system.

Across both roofs, the completed installation will comprise:
50 × 450 W solar panels
⚡ 22.5 kWp total array capacity
🏘️ Serving 12 individual properties
☀️ 28 panels / 12.6 kWp being installed on this first roof this week

A key part of the design is the use of an Allume SolShare system.
Rather than dedicating separate sections of the PV array to individual flats, SolShare allows the solar generation from a single shared array to be dynamically distributed between multiple properties.

The available solar energy can be directed to the apartments that are using electricity at that particular time, helping to make better use of the generation across the building.

For a 12-property development like this, it means the residents can benefit from a shared rooftop solar installation without requiring 12 completely separate PV systems, while still retaining their own individual electricity supplies and meters.

The mounting system is now laid out on the first roof and 28 panels are due to be installed this week, before work progresses across the second roof to complete the full 50-panel system.

A great example of how communal roof space can be used to bring the benefits of renewable energy to multiple individual homes. ☀️⚡🏘️

☀️ Another 12-panel solar PV & battery storage installation completed this week in Burgess Hill ☀️

This system has been designed across three different roof elevations, making the most of the available roof space while accounting for the different orientations and shading conditions throughout the day.

Because some panels will naturally receive less sunlight than others at certain times, we’ve installed panel-level optimisers. These allow each panel to operate more independently, helping to reduce the impact that shading on one panel can have on the performance of the rest of the system.

We also installed a Fox ESS 10 kWh battery storage system, allowing the customer to store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it later when the property needs it, helping to reduce reliance on imported grid electricity.

And although the weather was cloudy and overcast when these photos were taken, the panels will still generate electricity. Solar PV doesn’t need bright sunshine to work — it can continue producing from daylight even on dull days, albeit at a lower output than in clear, sunny conditions.

With the full solar and battery system now installed and commissioned, the property is ready to start benefiting immediately and is perfectly placed to make the most of the brighter spring and summer months ahead. ☀️⚡🔋

☀️ Making the most of every ray of sunshine!

Another solar PV installation completed by Blue Electric, this time on a property located within a conservation area.

With the chimney casting partial shade across sections of the array at different points throughout the day, careful system design was particularly important. To help minimise the effect of this shading, we installed power optimisers at panel level.

⚡ Why use solar optimisers?
On a conventional string system, shading on one panel can reduce the performance of other panels within the same string. Optimisers allow each panel to operate much more independently at its own maximum power point, helping to:

☀️ Reduce losses caused by partial shading
📈 Maximise generation from the available roof space
🔎 Provide individual panel-level monitoring
⚡ Reduce the impact of differences in panel performance

Optimisers can't create sunlight where there isn't any, but they can help ensure that a shaded panel doesn't unnecessarily hold back the rest of the array as the sun moves around the property throughout the day.

🏡 Solar PV in a conservation area?

Being within a conservation area doesn't automatically prevent a property from having solar panels. In this case, the array is installed on a roof area away from the highway and public footpath, and the installation was able to proceed within the relevant Permitted Development requirements.

Every property presents different challenges — orientation, shading, roof layout and planning considerations all need to be taken into account to get the best possible result.
