This afternoon I had the privilege of attending the Volunteer Awards and was genuinely shocked to be named Corporate Volunteer Team Winner 2026.

To be honest, the award isn’t really what this post is about.

On 26th June it will be 2 years since my mum passed away. During the final months of her life, she was cared for by the incredible team at St Catherine’s Hospice.

The love, compassion, dignity and support they showed not only to Mum, but to our whole family, was something I’ll never forget. At one of the hardest times of our lives, they were simply amazing.

That’s why, when the opportunity came to support the hospice through Shield Build, it was an easy decision.

Over the last year we’ve helped organise fundraising events, volunteered on Christmas tree collections and built changing facilities in their new superstore free of charge. In truth, it never felt like volunteering. It felt like a small way of saying thank you for everything they did for Mum and for us.

To then receive an email a couple of months ago saying I’d been nominated for this award was a surprise in itself. To actually win it today was something I genuinely wasn’t expecting.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at St Catherine’s Hospice. The work you do every single day is incredible and makes such a difference to families going through some of the toughest moments of their lives.

This award will take pride of place, but what means even more is knowing that in some small way we’ve been able to give something back to a charity that means so much to me and my family.
