# 6 Ways to Keep Your House Cool Without Air Con
Summer heatwave hitting hard? You don't need air conditioning to keep your home comfortable. Try these first:
**1. Shut your curtains and blinds in the day**
Close them on any windows that get direct sun, especially in the morning and early afternoon. Blocking the light out stops heat building up in the first place — much easier than trying to cool a room down later.
**2. Open windows strategically, not constantly**
Get air moving through the house early morning and late evening when it's cooler outside, then shut everything up once the outside temp climbs above the inside temp. Leaving windows open all day just invites the heat in.
**3. Use fans the smart way**
Point a fan out of an upstairs window in the evening to pull hot air out of the house. A bowl of ice in front of a fan can also give you a few degrees of extra cooling for a couple of hours.
**4. Turn off anything that generates heat**
Ovens, tumble dryers, and even laptops and games consoles left on standby all add heat to a room. Cook on the hob or barbecue instead of the oven when you can.
**5. Swap bedding and close doors on unused rooms**
Lighter bedding helps at night, and shutting doors on rooms you're not using stops cool air escaping and stops those rooms adding heat back into the rest of the house.
**6. Get your insulation checked**
Good insulation isn't just for winter — it slows heat getting in during summer too. If your loft insulation is old or thin, it could be working against you both ways.
These tricks will take the edge off, but they've got limits — especially with UK summers getting hotter and longer each year. If you want a proper long-term fix, that's where air conditioning comes in.
