On average in Britain we experience 12 rainy days a month.

Drying clothes becomes a problem when it’s wet outside, follow our tips to reduce the impact wet washing drying in side your home has on mould growth.

To dry washing indoors, you can use an airer, dehumidifier, or drying rack. You can also try these tips to help your clothes dry faster and prevent mold and damp.

Use an airer

An electric clothes airer can help dry clothes faster than an unheated airer.

Hang clothes neatly, pulling out sleeves, trousers, and socks.

Space clothes out at least an inch apart.

Turn clothes over after a few hours.

Use a dehumidifier

A dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air, which can help prevent mold and damp.

Some dehumidifiers even have a laundry-drying function.

Use a drying rack

A drying rack helps spread out clothes so air can circulate around them.

Improve airflow

Position clothes near an open window or use a fan to circulate air.

Avoid drying clothes on radiators, which can create condensation and lead to mold and rust.

Use fabric conditioner

Fabric conditioner can help prevent damp odors and make clothes softer.

Does wet washing cause mould?

A question we get asked regularly, well here is the truth about the matter:

Yes, drying wet clothes indoors can cause mold growth. This can lead to health issues, structural damage, and musty smells.

How does wet washing cause mold?

Moisture: Wet clothes release moisture into the air as they dry. This moisture can condense on cold surfaces like walls, mirrors, and windows.

Poor ventilation: Without adequate ventilation, the excess moisture can't escape.

Mold growth: The moisture creates ideal conditions for mold growth. Mold can appear as black or green patches on walls.

Health risks

Mold can trigger asthma attacks for people who are sensitive to dust and mold spores.

Damp and mold can contribute to respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies, or asthma.

Damp and mold can affect the immune system, especially for the very young and the elderly.

How to prevent mold

Use a dehumidifier or moisture catcher to reduce humidity and moisture.

Make sure the room is well ventilated.
Use the highest spin cycle setting on your washing machine to wring out excess water.

Roll clothes in a towel to soak up excess water before hanging them up.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, a typical uninsulated loft can lose up to 25% of a home's heat, making it one of the largest areas of heat loss in a house.

Key points about loft heat loss:

Significant proportion: A quarter of a home's heat can be lost through an uninsulated roof space.

Importance of insulation: Properly installed loft insulation can significantly reduce heat loss and lower energy bills.

Heat rising principle: Because hot air rises, the roof is a major area for heat escape.

Inadequate loft insulation is a contributing factor to damp on ceilings

If you need your loft insulation inspecting or upgrading please send us a message.
