A recent Lime Mortar Restoration carried out in Sheepy Magna for a client that had various areas of incorrect cement mortar pointing done during repairs.

We came in and restored the front and rear elevations on this property stunning property using a lime based mortar.

Replacing several broken roof tiles throughout.

Client then advised brickwork was loose above their oak door, so we had ct_construction_coventry come in and install a lintel for the client, ensuring the brickwork is safe & secure 👍🏽

A recent Lime Mortar Restoration carried out on a property in Coventry

Client wanted things tidied up at eye level on the side and the gable end side completely restored after a previous door being bricked up on the side and incorrect cement mortar used throughout.

We came in to take out all that non breathable material and provide them with a breathable solution.

Client kept us well fed and watered with egg batches, biscuits and tea making it such a pleasure to carry out these services for her.

A recent Lime Mortar Restoration we completed in Stratford Upon Avon in August.

Client wants us to return and finish off the Ridge as he has now replaced the wooden fascia’s like for like.

This project was completed in 2.5 weeks start to finish.
Allowing 1 week for carbonation before a total site clean down to wrap up.

Are you looking at getting Repointing carried out on your property? 🏠

Then consider these few things first 👇🏽

When looking for trades people, it can be difficult to find someone that specialises in Lime Based Mortar restoration work.

When you own period properties such as this:

Breathability is paramount, as these properties don’t have cavities and using non breathable materials such as cement over properties without cavities can cause extensive damage both externally to the brickwork and internally causing moisture on your walls due to either a lack of mortar in the joints or cement trapping it inside.

Causing brickwork to perish and ultimately bricks needing to be replaced.

Unfortunately on this occasion the client had experienced just that. She didn’t want the brickwork replaced but in turn we applied a lime based mortar to the joints as per original and no further damage is to be caused, extending the lifespan of this property.

If you suspect cement mortar has been repointed into your joints, it’s purely a matter of time until issues arise.

You can often tell by texture and colour, if the mortar is of a grey finish and smooth. There’s a 99% chance it’s cement and shouldn’t be in your brickwork joints!

So where does all that dust actually go? 👀💨

Part 2 of the DeWalt dust separator demo.

The principle is pretty simple — the separator does the heavy lifting before the dust reaches the extractor.

As the dust and debris are pulled through the system, the separator uses the airflow to drop the heavier material into the collection drum, while the remaining finer dust continues through to the dust extractor.

That means the extractor isn’t having to deal with the full load of debris coming off the grinder.

Less going into the extractor = less filter loading, less frequent emptying and a setup that can keep working harder for longer.

When you’re raking out mortar all day, little improvements like this make a big difference.

It’s another part of the setup helping me keep dust under control while getting through the work.

One more weapon added to the dust extraction arsenal. 🧱💨

If you do a lot of raking out, you’ll know exactly how quickly a dust extractor can fill up.

So I’ve added the Dust Separator into the setup and here’s a quick demo of what it actually does.

The separator catches a large proportion of the dust and debris before it reaches the extractor, helping to keep the vacuum filter cleaner, maintain suction for longer and reduce how often I’m stopping work to empty the machine.

For me, it’s all about building a better extraction setup around the work.

Raking out old mortar creates a serious amount of fine dust, so proper extraction isn’t an optional extra — it’s part of doing the job properly.

Another tool added to the arsenal. 🔧

Last Friday of the month… you know what that means. 🧱😂

Time to give the trowel the monthly service it absolutely didn’t ask for.

After weeks of lime mortar, cement, dust and general abuse, this thing has earned a clean.

A grinder makes light work of the build up but there’s something ridiculously satisfying about bringing an old trowel back to life.

Because apparently, as bricklayers, we’ll spend hours restoring someone else’s brickwork…

…but somehow forget to clean our own tools. 🤦🏽‍♂️😂

This is why the right tools for the right situation matters. 🧱⚒️

A few weeks ago I came across a video where an apprentice had accidentally scored the door trim while raking out mortar.

Sounds minor… until you realise how quickly damage like that can turn into an expensive repair — especially on a client’s property.

When you’re raking out, it’s not simply a case of sticking a grinder in the joint and letting it rip.

The right attachment, the right depth, dust extraction and, most importantly, control all make a difference.

For this job I’m using a mortar rake attachment from Toolstation, which gives me the control I need to remove the existing mortar while working carefully around the surrounding brickwork and details.
