At first glance this looks like a strange white web — but it may actually be fungal mycelium, the underground/hidden network that makes up the main body of a fungus.

These tiny threads are nature’s recycling machinery. They grow through dead wood and release enzymes that break down tough plant material, helping turn old wood back into nutrients and organic matter.

And here’s the really cool part: the mushroom we notice is only the reproductive structure. The real fungal network can be spread throughout the wood where we can’t see it.

So when we leave dead wood, leaf litter and other organic material in the garden, we’re not just making a mess — we’re feeding an entire microscopic ecosystem. 🪵➡️🍄➡️🪱➡️🐦

Would you leave this alone in your garden or remove it? 👇

🌿 A tiny alien hiding on the bear’s breeches… 🛸

I spotted this strange little structure on my Acanthus mollis and had to stop and investigate. It looks like a miniature mushroom, or some kind of tiny sea creature growing on the plant! 🪼🍄

But those bizarre tentacle-like strands actually have a botanical purpose.

They’re part of the plant’s seed-producing structure. Bear’s breeches produces woody seed capsules, and the seeds are held in place by specialised little structures called retinacula — essentially tiny spring-like mechanisms. When the capsule ripens, it can split suddenly and catapult the seeds away from the plant. 🌱💥

And that’s the thing I love about gardening — the more closely you look, the stranger it gets.

A plant you walk past every day suddenly reveals something that looks completely otherworldly… and then you discover there’s an ingenious bit of engineering behind it.

Nature really does have a way of making you stop and ask: “What on earth is THAT?” 😂🌿
