🐝 WASP SEASON IS NOW WELL UNDERWAY LOCALLY

This week alone I've attended a number of wasp nests in sheds and outbuildings, which is a good indication that the season is now starting to ramp up.

A word of caution if you're spending time in the garden this weekend...

Please take care when entering sheds, garages and outbuildings that you may not have been into for a week or two. Early-season wasp nests are often attached to shed roofs, door frames and roof timbers and can sometimes go unnoticed until they're disturbed.

One nest I attended this week had been built directly onto the top of a shed door. Had the door been opened quickly, the nest could easily have been damaged and the situation may have ended quite unpleasantly for the person opening it.

At this stage of the season many nests are still relatively small, however once the first worker wasps hatch, nests can increase in size and activity surprisingly quickly.

Common locations include:
• Sheds
• Garages
• Roof eaves
• Bird boxes
• Children's playhouses
• Outdoor storage areas

If you've noticed wasp activity around your property and aren't sure what you're dealing with, feel free to send over a photo or short video for identification and advice.

☀️ Warm weather + Bank Holiday gardening = increased reports of early-season wasp nests locally.

Many people will only just be opening sheds, garages, roof spaces and outdoor storage areas after the recent good weather — and this is often when starter nests are first discovered.

At this stage nests may still appear relatively small, however once the first worker wasps hatch, nests can rapidly increase in size and activity over a surprisingly short period of time.

I’m already receiving increasing enquiries regarding:
• Shed nests
• Garage nests
• Roof/eaves activity
• Outdoor seating/play areas

Not all flying insect activity is wasps, so correct identification is always important before any treatment takes place.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF A DEVELOPING WASPS NEST....🐝

This solitary queen wasp has been repeatedly visiting this timber for over two weeks, chewing weathered wood fibres to make paper pulp for a nearby starter nest.

At this stage:
• only the queen is active
• the nest is still very small and hidden
• and most people don’t realise nest-building is already underway

This kind of behaviour is a strong indication that a queen is establishing a nest somewhere close by.

If you notice a lone large wasp repeatedly:
• scraping wood
• returning to the same area
• or flying a consistent route

…it can indicate a developing nest nearby before workers have even hatched.

Once the first workers emerge, colony numbers can increase rapidly through late spring and summer, turning a small starter nest into a much larger problem.

If safe to do so, observing the wasp’s flight direction can sometimes help identify where it may be nesting nearby. Avoid disturbing suspected nesting areas or attempting to block entrances, as wasps can sting if threatened.

Even if you don’t notice this kind of behaviour, this is the ideal time of year to regularly check sheds, lofts, roof spaces, garages and other outdoor buildings for small starter nests before colonies become established.

Starter nests are usually:
• golf ball to tennis ball sized
• grey/papery in appearance
• often hanging from a single stalk
• and commonly found in sheltered dark areas

Early identification is often key to preventing a much larger infestation later in the season.

Although it’s been a bit cooler today, the warmer weather earlier this week (Tuesday & Wednesday) brought a noticeable increase in enquiries ☀️🐝

Just a quick bit of advice for this time of year (April–May):

👉 It’s generally too early for large active wasp nests
👉 Most wasp activity is just single queens starting out
👉 If you’re seeing lots of insects, it’s usually:
• Honey bees
• Bumblebees
• Masonry bees
• Or other species

⚠️ Remember honey bees can still sting if disturbed, but they should NOT be treated

If you're unsure what you're dealing with, I’m always happy to help identify from photos or videos (taken from a safe distance) before you book anything.

I can still assist with early-stage wasp nests (single queen), especially where there are concerns such as:
• Fear or anxiety around wasps
• Allergies or previous reactions
• Nests close to doors, windows or around the home

Honest advice as always 👍
