Small holes and what look like worm casts appeared in your lawn recently? It’s most probably adult crane flys emerging from their larvae stage (leather jackets)

The good news is that last years larvae have now matured and are no longer in your lawn.
The bad news is that in the next 1-3 weeks, the whole cycle will repeat itself!

If you see the holes and casts and see excessive daddy long legs around the lawn ( a few flying around are a natural amount), a couple of weeks after first seeing them is a brilliant time to apply nematodes to control the newly hatched larvae. They are more susceptible to the nematodes during their early life cycle.

Why is some of my lawn recovering and some bits not?

That’s a question that a lot of customers have been asking this week and this photo shows exactly why!
The 2 samples were taken roughly 6” apart, the one on the left taken from an area still brown and the one on the right was taken from an area turning green and starting to recover. It shows the drastic difference in the soil moisture levels. This is Localised Dry Patch (or LDP) at work.

As predicted, LDP has become a problem for lawns recovering from this summers drought. From 20 lawns I visited for treatments in one day, nearly all were showing some signs of suffering from it.

Aeration and wetting agents are key to getting moisture back into the soil profile. Until moisture can get back into the soil, the areas affected willl not recover.

The biggest factors in lawns recovering after the summer drought are going to be aeration and application of wetting agents.

Soils have become baked and this usually results in what’s called Localised Dry Patch taking hold. You will see this as yellowing bare patches that show no sign of life even after the rain has returned. Fungi in the soil secrete a waxy chemical which binds to the soil resulting in water not being allowed to pass through. The soil has turned hydrophobic.

Aeration helps create pockets where the water can get through. Applying a wetting agent is the next step. This releases the surface tension of the soil, allowing the water to filter through it again.

Our late summer liquid feed has everything in it that the soil and plant need to get going again . A special mix by us, this isn’t available off the shelf.

As it’s been so dry with no rain, the mulched grass from the 2 acre paddock we cut down around 6 weeks ago hasn’t been able to start to rot down, but rather has turned into hay! So the decision was taken to flail collect it. All picked up and looking great for the family to use.

With the extreme heat and lack of decent rainfall we’ve recently been experiencing, the grass plant will start to go dormant. This results in it turning brown and growth slowing right down. Fear not as when the temps cool and rain returns, most will bounce back perfectly fine on their own in a few weeks.

A major problem to look out for is Localised Dry Patch. This is where the soil has dried out too much and become hydrophobic. No amount of watering will change this. We can apply wetting agents to break the surface tension of the soil, allowing water back through the rootzone once again.

We were asked to get this 2 acre plot of land back from overgrown and unusable to an area the family can now use and enjoy.
First cut done, now onto twice monthly cuts to slowly start getting it looking smart and useable for summer.

Narrow access isn’t a problem as our compact tractor and flail mower are around 5ft in width.

Been a busy time getting regular weekly, twice monthly and monthly large area grass cuts done recently.
