The biggest factors in lawns recovering after the summer drought are going to be aeration and application of wetting agents.

Soils have become baked and this usually results in what’s called Localised Dry Patch taking hold. You will see this as yellowing bare patches that show no sign of life even after the rain has returned. Fungi in the soil secrete a waxy chemical which binds to the soil resulting in water not being allowed to pass through. The soil has turned hydrophobic.

Aeration helps create pockets where the water can get through. Applying a wetting agent is the next step. This releases the surface tension of the soil, allowing the water to filter through it again.

Our late summer liquid feed has everything in it that the soil and plant need to get going again . A special mix by us, this isn’t available off the shelf.

As it’s been so dry with no rain, the mulched grass from the 2 acre paddock we cut down around 6 weeks ago hasn’t been able to start to rot down, but rather has turned into hay! So the decision was taken to flail collect it. All picked up and looking great for the family to use.

With the extreme heat and lack of decent rainfall we’ve recently been experiencing, the grass plant will start to go dormant. This results in it turning brown and growth slowing right down. Fear not as when the temps cool and rain returns, most will bounce back perfectly fine on their own in a few weeks.

A major problem to look out for is Localised Dry Patch. This is where the soil has dried out too much and become hydrophobic. No amount of watering will change this. We can apply wetting agents to break the surface tension of the soil, allowing water back through the rootzone once again.

First cut done, now onto twice monthly cuts to slowly start getting it looking smart and useable for summer.

Narrow access isn’t a problem as our compact tractor and flail mower are around 5ft in width.
